Hey all, new guy to the forums and to the hobby. Have zero experience besides what I have learned doing research. Still tons more to learn so I'll thank everyone now for all the help I've already received and hope to get in the future.

Little info about my setup.

30 gallon breeder, I know it's small but I don't have a lot of room and 2 rambunctious large dogs I can't go bigger at the moment. So it's sitting in my basement on a counter top that doesn't get direct sunlight.

I have a fluval HOB filter with carbon media

25 pounds of reefrock 2.0 that was cured at my LFS (you'll have to forgive my crappy aquascaping).

20pds of caribsea sandbed

200 watt heater (went bigger so I could use it in a larger tank down the road)

Fluval aquasky 300-25000k led light

Jebao PP-4 powerhead.

I plan to have a few fish (whatever my tank can support) and a few corals softies easy stuff to start.

Tank has been up and running for a few weeks, I got a bottle of Dr. Tim's One and Only, put it in about a week into the tank operation and dosed up to 2ppm of Dr Tim's ammonium chloride.

I got daitom's after only a few days of the tank being up and running even before the One and Only dose. I had some cheapo test strips from the LFS but they never showed any ammonia or nitrite/nitrate. So I ordered up a better kit and mistakenly purchased the API kit for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. After dosing up to 2ppm of ammonia it's taken a few days for it to drop to 0. Still have a little nitrite and now 2ppm of nitrate in the system.

I'm getting a algae hair bloom that's brown/green. I'm not going to add a fish until the ammonia is at 0 and I'm for sure the tank has cycled. But I need to ask when do I add the CuC?

I'll make another post from my phone with some pics.

I'm getting my saltwater and RODI from the local LFS
RODI is (in my opinion) one of the most valuable pieces to this hobby - although supporting your LFS isn't bad either :)

Best of luck with your tank and don't be afraid to ask this SUPER HELPFUL community anything :) We are all one big family!

So far learned a lot from this site! One question I do need to ask is the brown that’s growing on the rocks and sandbed diatoms? I don’t know if I trust my LFS cured rock, I know I won’t be buying livestock from them. Saltwater and RODI look good based on what I can test from them.

Also I am seeing more and more white on the rocks, almost like a chalk what is that? The pics in the 2nd post are in timeline order, starting from the first week to this morning. So you can see the progression.

I am also seeing very tiny organisms in the tank, too small to get a pic with but visible when they are moving around on the back glass. They are milky white in color and almost translucent. They are the size of the tip of a small needle

Here are my tests from my api kit this morning. I will get the Red Sea kit soon, already have one for minerals. Based on this I am still a bit away from livestock?

It appears you're still registering ammonia with the test kit. Looks like your tank is still cycling. Until you're registering no ammonia and no nitrite I would not add anything to the tank.

They still seem a tad high - You could probably pick out a chromis or Damsal now if you really wanted to, they’re super hardy.

Just know that these fish can become a little aggresive - chromis the least of which.

Not really recommended. The OP is still registering ammonia, and ammonia in any level is toxic to fish. Best to let the cycle finish :) Better safe than sorry

Do not disagree one bit!
Captain42 patience is your best friend.

If you could wait a month or so before adding any lighting to it, it would really benefit your tank!

Here’s probably the best tip you will ever get from here;

Quarantine everything wet that goes in your tank.
Set up a 10g now and get the fish you want, that way by the time your display is ready so are your fish!
Start reading up on the QT processes now!

In all honesty though - this will save you a lot of heart ache.
