i recently purchased a 120g and have had an issue with plumbing the bulkhead fitting for the 40g sump. The bulkheads work fine but the only thing I can find to match the thread pattern is abs fittings but I can find 1 1/4 abs fittings anywhere. I’m trying to find something that will thread on or couple to the threads of this abs fitting or buy new bulk heads with different ends. 2 of the overflows are 1 inch pvc that goes inside the tank side bulk head fitting. The 2 returns are 3/4 that go inside the other 2 bulkhead fittings. Edit: I would like to plumb the sump with pvc so I’m not sure how I can go from that bulkhead thread to 3/4 pvc

In my experience, your plumbing will NOT be connected to those external threads. Those external threads exist only for the nut that holds the bulkhead in place. Your 3/4 inch PVC will GLUE into the inside of the bulkhead.

Well I guess I have to look into getting new fittings. These probably had other fittings on the ends that were cut off so nothing can fit inside of them. Any idea where I can find new bulkhead fittings with pvc ends this same size?

Here is some info from the Bulk Reef Supply website:

3/4" ABS Bulkhead Slip X Slip Dimensions (see diagram)

3/4" ABS Bulkhead Slip X Slip Dimensions (see diagram)
A - 52mm/2.04"
B - 50mm/1.98"
C - 34mm/1.33"

It does appear that someone had previously glued PVC into your bulkhead, then cut it off. You'll need new bulkheads.

I'm pretty sure you need to replace all the bulkheads. The PVC pipe and fittings attach to the inside of thw bulkhead. I think the bulkheads you have were cut to remove the plumbing when you moved the tank.

Thanks for the help guys. I did see that on their site but was unsure on which ones to buy but thanks for the clarification.

Welcome to R2R!!

If you need help finding the bulk heads, most LFS have them for sale.

You have the choice to get slip bulkheads (where you glue your plumbing in to the bulkhead) or threaded bulkheads (female threads that you screw a PVC adapter in). The PVC adapter looks like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/DURA-3-4-in-Schedule-40-PVC-Male-Adapter-10-Pack-CP436-007/202101747

I would strongly urge you to put several unions in your plumbing which will allow you to disassemble and reassemble your plumbing for cleaning, moving or removing an obstruction. This prevents a lot of headaches!

Here's what some of my plumbing looks like (not as neat as a lot but functional). You can see 7 different unions that can be unscrewed to disassemble every section of the plumbing. The would also allow you to drain your overflow and even replace a bulk head if needed without having to drain the tank.
