Hey guys. Hoping someone can help me out. I received 4 corals from LiveAquaria yesterday (2 hammers, Duncan, and torch) and one of the hammers is not doing good so far. All of it’s polyps are shrunken and it’s oozing a brown stringy substance. This is my first batch of corals so please help me out.
Water Parameters:
Salinity: 1.026
Ph: about 8.3
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 2.5

The other hammer and the torch look great. The Duncan is still retracted but not doing bad. But the green hammer is not doing well. It’s also sloughed off several polyps this evening. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Did you dip the corals before putting them in the tank?

Brown jelly can spread, get it out!

if It’s oozing a brown substance it’s most likely brown jelly disease, can be caused by a number of things. I would take it out and qt it if you can. Brown jelly disease can spread and wipe out your other corals. I’ve heard of other having success with iodine dipping but you will want to keep it in qt until healthy.

how long has your tank been up and running? Looks fairly new?

Tank has been running for about 4 weeks. Used Fritz turbo start to cycle and have had no ammonia issues. I understand the tank will still be immature in regards to biodiversity And overall stability though. I’ll pick up some iodine tomorrow and do a pretty good dip on it. Unfortunately I don’t have a qt tank currently. Definitely need to get one set up though. I really appreciate the feed back guys.

I added my first torch and hammer at about the same time and I still have them 2 years later. As long as you keep your Params stable.

The torch and other hammer are doing great. The Duncan is still mad currently but doesn’t appear to have any issues. Just have to find it’s happy spot. Good thing LiveAquaria gives a 30 day guarantee on the hammer if it doesn’t make it.

Running an AI Prime HD on a Waterbox 30 AIO. This is my first tank and really enjoying it so far. One thought to ponder about the hammer: when I received it yesterday from UPS the frag plug had fallen out of the styrofoam block in the bag and the coral was head down in a pile of broken off polyps in the bottom of the bag. The brown stuff appears to be coming out of some torn polyps when I look closer. Also it really doesn’t look like pictures of brown jelly found on the internet. Way more dark and stringy. What do you think?

Nevermind. Upon turning on white lights and picking up the coral for a close look, it is definitely brown jelly and it has lost a ton of polyps. Is there anything I should do to keep it from spreading to other corals? Dip them in iodine when I get some tomorrow?

Corals, especially many euphyllia defecate...is there a chance it could be doing that? I don’t want to steer you in the wrong direction, just trying to help you narrow it down.

When I took the coral out of the tank to take a close look it was obvious that it was brown jelly. Took it to my sink and lightly ran freshwater over it. Almost 100% of polyps instantly sloughed off. Also smelled rotten when outside of the tank.

Jeez, doesn’t sound too good, I would contact the retailer you got it from maybe they can replace it

I got it from LiveAquaria and they have a 30 day coral guarantee. Looking up the process of getting a credit now. All the other corals from them look great though.

That is a Certified Captive Grown Corals from LA?

Yep. It was a CCGC coral. I was very surprised because it came with a fancy inspection certificate and the guarantee. I don’t think mine really got inspected.
