New Hanna magnesium NOT CONSISTENT?

Being in the hobby for awhile. Have almost all of the Hanna checkers. Hopefully the replacement will make it right.

The Hanna isn’t giving me consistent results. Results appear to be high as well. First test was flashing 1800 which means results are out of range. Second test indicated 1695. Aqua forest testing at 1470.

I can't really complain.

  • As always, don't clean cuvettes with tap water. Use RO/DI.
  • Don't use the syringe tips, they add unnecessary confusion to the measurement. I've found that depending on how fast you fill the syringe you'll draw differ amounts of sample/reagent.
I got my checker and reagents from a Czech shop that got it sent directly from the hanna factory in Romania.
My wild guess is that, if they're all manufactured in Romania, the reagents may have gone bad while travelling from Romania to the US.

Got the new reagents and getting better numbers. Seems like the older checker works with the new reagents as well just have to set a manual timer for 3 minutes. Left is old checker and right is the replacement checker.

How many tests have you run? Can you do a few tests to check consistency ?

I have good results with their ulr phosphate and their alk . This is disappointing but I’ll keep the other two mentioned . I just wish they could have spent a couple bucks and added memory ability in their products . I can’t tell you how many times I had to retake the test because I got preoccupied with something in the 3 min period and missed the reading . setting a timer doesn’t help . When it goes off you have to remember or figure out why !!

For the old checker and using a manual timer, do you just set the timer and when it goes off hit the read button?

That’s correct. Just press button after three minutes passes when it’s showing c2

How do you still have the old checker? I sent the old and got a replacement.

If you have Amazon Alexa you can name the timer, I’m sure Google has this option too.

If setting a named alarm still doesn’t do it for you, how about setting your phone up next to the checker and recording it, you just have to replay the video.

Looks like Hanna did their homework this time and fixed it. I'm guessing the Old Mag checker is fine but just need a timer? Not sure if i want to gamble on buying a used one .

Thanks reef !!! I have set alarms and sometimes I get preoccupied doing other maintenance which takes me out of the room . The window of opportunity to get the readings is too short but the point was that for a couple bucks more they could have should have included a alarm and or a memory storage of some sort , or even the ability for you to store it on a memory stick . I know I would have willing to pay a little more .

I guess I was one of the very first that contacted them and I was required to ship the old one to them for a replacement. It’s all good as long as this one works.
