got a new Hannah alk checker yesterday. The blue one that checks dkh (in case their are different models out there ).

Brand new, my question is do they feel like, (how can I word it) not great builds?

When I put the battery in I had to fight the lid off prying it with a drill bit to wedge it off. When I put kid back in, it doesn’t feel flush with the bottom perimeter...and lastly when I put vial in, the top lid doesn’t close 100 percent. When vial is out it does, but it won’t snap all the way down while it’s in there.

Ultimately if it’s accurate that’s what matters, but is it just me, or is it a bit off physically?

The lid should close all the way. As for the battery its a bit of a pain due to the connection. I'd reach out to whomever you purchased it from to see what they say.

Yeah, the lid on my Hanna PPM Alk checker is like that as well. It stays ajar when the vial is in. Thankfully, it’s a very short test so I keep it closed with my fingers while running the test.

Thank goodness my Phosphorus ULR checker’s lid stays closed as I’d be super annoyed if I had to manually keep it closed for the entire 3 minute countdown!

I have found that if you rotate the vial inside the checker you can get it to set better. Just a quarter turn you may need to do it a couple of times to get it lined up right. I always get the lid to close all the way after doing this.

For the price i was also surprised with the quality of the build, it feels rather like a cheap peice of plastic. But it works fine so far

Hmmm. I’ve always read that for testing accuracy, you always want the vial to be oriented in the same direction during both the C1 and C2 readings. Hence I’ve never even considered rotating the vial to get the lid to close properly. By default, I always orient the 10 ml marking to the front of the checker.

I'd be willing to bet that the lid not closing properly is due to height discrepancy in the vials not the checker or the lid. Call your vendor and see if they will send you some new vials. Or if you have a vial from another checker check if the fit is better.

Ok thanks for the replies, I’m not alone in this thought.

Listen, it could be the ugliest contraption of all time, if accurate , doesn’t phase me. Just want to make sure others are that way and I’m not “stressing” the kid by trying to close it and it not fitting.

Interesting I never new this. How do you get the vial in the same direction do you have a mark on the vial? I have done a couple of test in a row over the years and the numbers are almost exactly the same and I have always rotated the vial to get the lid to close.

Just point the 10ML mark on the vial towards the front everytime.

Yup, that’s exactly what I do!
