Hey all - my ~5yo heaters are no longer keeping the tank at a happy temperature, so I'm in the market for replacements. I'm pretty sure they are Visitherm 300W x 2 in the sump.

Tank Info - 120DT/40 sump in the living room. My target temp for the tank is 78-79. House temp is 74 during the day, but at night we let it drop to 68 in the winter.

I don't currently have a temp controller but now may be the chance to add one as well.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks in advance

I recently switched to the cobalt neotherm (the 300 Watt) and absolutely love it. Keeps the temperature nice and stable. Before hand I was using a titanium heater that required an eternal controller.

After much researching I decided to always use Eheim Jaeger heaters. Everything else had too many horror stories of malfunctions.

Even then I recommend a controller. Redundancy is good when a single mistake can fry your entire tank.

Thanks for the response!

The only problem I have with the eheim jager heaters is the length. The 250's are 17", and the 300's are 19". I suppose 2 x 250 "should" be enough, but I'd prefer 2 x 300W. My sump is a standard 40 breeder with dividers so there just isn't room for the 300's.

I always figure out how much wattage I need for my tank/sump and then use 2 heaters, each at 1/2 the total wattage needed. Again, if one gets stuck on, it's harder to have a fish fry. There's no reason why you couldn't divide your total wattage between 3 or even 4 heaters if you need small footprints.
