Hello all, great to be here. I’ve done freshwater tanks over the years and just now started in saltwater. I’ve been wanting to start a saltwater tank for a very long time now.

Taking it slow to understand my Fluval Evo 13.5 tank, pump, filtration, protein skimmer, powerhead, wave maker, & heating monitor. I currently have the tank & equipment setup and filled with live rock. I chose to go with boxed saltwater to make things a little easier to start.

I’m working on flow right now. Really trying to get the hang of understanding how to best direct the flow in the tank. This seems to be very important with the types of critters I choose from my research so far.

Once I have a stable environment I plan on starting with some Zoas. They really catch my eye with all the different colors they can come in. I’m excited in learning how to care for them.

I’m going to create a build thread detailing my setup soon so I can get feedback on a few things (I think I got carried away with a little too much substrate).

These forums and YouTube have been crucial in how far I’ve gotten relatively quickly. Big thanks for everyone who shares.

Welcome! Glad you joined.

Substrate can be personal preference, and can also vary by your tank's needs (jawfish desire a lot - undergravel filtration is how we used to keep dead spots at bay with +4" depths)

Sounds like you are pretty organized with already planning your build thread! Specific questions should likely go into relevant area(s) of Forum for better responses.

As for flow, in a smaller tank like that its best to not have any direct flow pointing at the rock, generally just put the pump in a corner and face it in a way that it creates a nice gyre of flow around the tank. If you get a wave maker with a pulse or wave option that's even better.

Zoas are a great first choice, but i would still wait awhile before getting into coral until your familiar with holding acceptable tank parameters. Its easy for nitrates and phosphates to bottom out in a new tank and that will for sure kill any zoas you have. When you are ready though, im near philly and have a pretty big zoa collection you could choose from, definitely more options than all the local fish stores.
