Good evening everyone!

I'm new here to the forums, and I am VERY new to running a saltwater aquarium!

I have been interested in having a saltwater aquarium for many many years, but I have never been patient enough to properly set up and maintain one.

I have had a 55 gallon fresh water aquarium successfully up and running for about 18-20 months now. We were using it as a "stepping stone" to get me in the habit of water changes, and monitoring the aquarium and such before diving into a saltwater aquarium.

We have been talking about and planning a saltwater aquarium since well before I started the freshwater aquarium. Finally, we went out and got a nice 60 gallon aquarium and stand combo! (It was on sale a petsmart for $174.99 regularly $349.99 a deal we just couldn't pass up!) However, now that I have gotten farther into this, I have found out that the stand that came with the aquarium is basically useless, as are the lights, and the hood, and almost everything . . . except the tank! We are now working on building a stand for the aquarium, and just a few days ago I picked up the 55 gallon tank that will be my sump tank! I have already picked up all the Aragonite base for the tank as well, next comes the lights, and return pump for the tank, as well as the overflow system. I do already have the circulation pumps, and powerheads so that is a plus! :)

Anyway, now that I am heading down the road of running a saltwater aquarium I thought I would go ahead and join the forums as a place to share my experience, and provide advice as I learn!

I look forward to getting to know you all!
~Matt

Welcome to R2R Matt and to the salty side. You've chosen wisely as this is a great resource for information and advice.

May I suggest starting a build thread here https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/member-tanks.52/. Great place to post pictures and ask your questions as you go through the build.

Side note...My daughter was a Disney cast member as well for a couple years while in school. Pretty obvious what she did if you look at my build thread...lol.

Welcome! I definitely understand your pain about buying things you could have gotten cheaper or better once you have a better understanding about the hobby. Oh the things I could have done differently haha.

Welcome aboard! You should read some of the builds in the forum to get an idea of what you should and shouldn't get. Remember equipment is what keeps your tank thriving. Also patience is very important when it comes to this hobby. Do it right the first time and you will have a living piece of art in you home. Have fun and keep us posted.
