New here

Hi, I'm new here and followed the link to introduce myself. I have always been interested in fish. I've had fresh water since I can remember and started salt water 8 years ago. Just recently upgraded my 40 breeder without a sump to a 40 breeder with a 20 gallon sump and reef octopus protein skimmer so I could keep everything more stable. I have a mixed reef with soft corals. Everything went great with building and plumbing my new sump except for the fact that I used silicone to caulk which apparently has mold preventer which is essentially like cyanide to a fish tank. I had researched it on multiple forums but apparently the information I read was old before they included mold preventer. So, I nuked my tank and killed pretty much everything about a month ago. I only had two clown fish but I had had them for eight years and I killed all my coral which was not great, but still a loss. I had a bit of an ammonia spike for a week after that happened but now everything is back to normal 3 weeks later.
I built my new sump with a 20 gallon tank from the dollar a gallon sale from Petco and used an old tank to cut the glass for my baffles. I drilled a 750 gph overflow. I self built my stand to be extra wide and long so I would have plenty of room to do maintenance. So far I'm very happy and my new coral fragments are doing the best they've ever done.

Welcome to R2R.

Any tips on drilling a tank? Today I will be drilling my 55 gal.
I was pretty nervous to try it but it was much easier than I thought. Now I've drilled three tanks and didn't have any trouble with any of them other than my diamond saw starting to get dull. I ordered mine from glassholes.com. I ordered the diamond hole saw at the same time from the same company. I think all of it together was $75. It all comes with directions on how to do it and they have a video that you can YouTube. It comes with a template that you clamp to the back of the tank so the hole saw doesn't slip too much. Then you just use a cordless drill, fill the hole with water that the template creates and steady pressure with the cordless drill. That's it. It just takes a while because they say if you push too hard you'll crack the tank, so you just let the saw do the work. Probably takes somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes per hole. So much more reliable than hang on back siphon type overflow.

i like your set up. I can't zoom in on your pictures but it looks nice. ouch on the losses. I couldn't figure out a way to shut down my first pilot tank to incorporate it into the full sized one i was making so i just kept it as is and built a second system. i did borrow the Bubble Magus protein skimmer when i moved the livestock to the bigger tank. I added a HOB filter to the small system to do some filtering. thank you for introducing yourself.

I'm sorry to hear about the tank crash. A little over a year ago I started a thread about members' tank crash horror stories. You aren't alone in this. This has happened to most of us at one time or another. I'm glad you joined us. Welcome to R2R!
