Hello,I'm new to the hobby since January 2015. We (my husband and I) have set up a 220 gallon reef tank. It seems everyday i have a new question. Today i was wondering if there is a certain way to position the circulation fans as to keep the fish food from being sucked into the return.

You can turn off powerheads during feedings or trying sinking pellets

There are times and controllers you can use that have feed modes that turn off for a set amount of time when you feed to prevent that. Using an apex I'm certain you could have the circulation stop, and then an automatic feeder dispense food. Short of that investment simply plugging the timers into a power strip, and that power strip into a timer works. I use a timer that is controlled by pegs that are placed at the time you want. Only using g the "on" peg, I manually turn the timer to off, and turn the dial so it will turn on in a few minutes. Costs less than $10 and works perfectly

I turn the fans off now, but the food still floats into the return. I cannot turn the return off as it will cause the water to go into our overflow.

You can get a floating fish food ring. The pellets and flakes will stay in there.
