Hi I'm new to saltwater aquariums, and I am in San Antonio, TX. I bought a 20 gallon long tank setup for my 9 year old son and me to work on in May 2013. When we got it, it was about a year old. I got it off a guy on Craigslist, and it came with live sand, live rock, extra base rock, lots of equipment and testing kits, filter, skimmer, lights, stand, and critters. We had 1 orange and white ocellaris, 1 coral beauty, 1 six line wrasse, 2 firefish, 1 bicolor blenny, 1 fire shrimp, 1 sea urchin, 4 xl turbo snails, and 5 or 6 small hermit crabs. We also had some kenya tree corals and colony polyps. My first thought was that this was way too much for a 20 gallon tank, but the price was right. I went on a 2 week trip and left the tank in the care of my neighbor who decided the tank did not need water added while I was gone even though the pumps were sucking air when I got home. Somehow, I only lost the shrimp, urchin, one firefish, and all the corals. I currently have the ocellaris, coral beauty, six line wrasse, blenny, and fire fish. The tank seems ok, but I have some issues with hair algae. Any and all tips are welcome, and I will be posting my algae questions after I read through some of the other posts.

Jbarnhart5 if your looking for a cure to an algae problem I have a partial solution for you. This short spines urchin has a voracious appetite for algae. I got my algae issues under control to the point that this guy leaves a white trail on my cured 9 month old live rock every night when he comes out to graze. He doesn't touch any of my corals, just a VERY thorough algae eater. I no longer need his services so if your in need I would happily donate this guy to you.

That would be really great! I am getting ready to leave town for a while but I should be back before the end of the month. I will pm you and we can meet up. I also just bought a condylactis anemone which is doing well. Do you think there would be any conflicts there?

Thanks for the great welcome

I am encouraged by all the welcoming people on this forum. Thanks everyone. I think it would be great to set up a San Antonio/South Texas forum on here if we could.
