Dear fellow reefers, although I have a reef tank for two years now, I see myself as a beginner. Too many things not going the way I want to and bad experiences with other fora. But hey. it's a new day, a new start!

I own a Red Sea Max C130, and re-started about a year ago. Tanks is still fairly empty with a royal gramma and some Lowe animals, ready to introduce some new inhabitants in the near future.

I do have a question at this moment. I have a big rock in the middle of the tank, but there seem to grow little spikes on there (see picture). Does anyone know what this is and how to fight it?

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Welcome to R2R and your new reefing family. The "spiky" thinks may be Vermetid Snails. I'm not the best at ID'ing things so let's wait for some others to chime in.

EDIT: Looks like Zach and I were typing at the same time, but that's two votes for Vermetid's.

Welcome to R2R!!! As you’re already finding out, this is a great place for information and we also have a really neat community!

Welcome home, you will love it here!

More tank pics please! :)

Welcome to R2R. I'm not sure what to tell you about the Vermetid Snails, but I'm sure someone wil give you good advice. I've had them since day one, but they have never been a problem. Over time it seems like their numbers have decreased. Others have had much bigger problems.

They do look like vermatid snails. Some people will glue the end of the tube shut with a dab of super glue to kill them. I wouldn't recommend doing that to too many at a time so you don't have an ammonia spike from die off. A few usually aren't a problem but a lot of them can start to irritate corals.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to R2R, glad to have you. I agree on the Vermetid snail. Like others have said a few isnt a big deal. I had them grow on frags and removed them with a scalpel from my fragging tool kit, just have to cut as close to the rock as possible so you get all.
