So I decided to update my lighting. My LEDs I built four years ago were showing their age with burnt bulbs minor flickering and corrosion. Rather than trying to rehabilitate the old DIY setup that included 4 retrofit T5's that were added two years ago when I moved I decided to pull an old hood out of storage that was fitted with two VHOs and one 150w DE halide.

I took everything out of the old black hood and painted it brown to match my stand and the inside I painted white.

I decided to go with two of the evergrow 120w (55 3w LED) LED fixtures after seeing some success with those lights by other people. I also will be running two whiter T5's instead of 4 (two blue two white) like my old setup and will just be using them to bring the color spectrum more to the white side without having to crank up the white leds so much.

Here are some pics of my progress:
Paint job and light struts added:

Found these really cool tool magnets at harbor freight that I thought would work well for mounting the LEDs (using two per LED panel):

LED test fit:

I'm trying to find a good way to install the T5's this morning so more to come!

Today I go the T5's in
I used the end caps from power strip bars as standoff for the T5 reflectors:

Both reflectors installed:

Only problem so far is the AC fans that came with the hood are extraordinarily noisy. I may have to switch them out for some quieter DC fans but I dont have any that are the same size on hand.

Looks good. What percentage are you running on the LEDs?
Thanks Randy,
I got the blues at 50% and the whites somewhere close to 30 or 35% at the moment. My old lights didn't have optics so I am going to work it up from there with a goal of 100% blues and 75% whites...but we will see.

Looks great. I will be interested to see what the coral growth is like. After the acclimatization time.
Thanks! We will see how coral growth turns out. Last time I had a par meter under my old lights I noticed the par had fallen off with all the missing diodes. I think this light will pack more punch so hopefully growth will be the same or better.

Looks good. Let me know if you want to get a new par reading with the new lights.
Thanks Mike,
I'd love that. Let me know when you want to come by. This weekend is pretty open for me as well as most evening except Mondays and Thursdays. Good news is the new hood makes it a lot easier to get the probe in and level without affecting the light output.
