Hello fellow reefers, new to the forum.
I recently purchased 4 Acan colonies from Ausieaquaticfarms and they should arrive sometime tomorrow. I run a 28 gallon aquapod (like a nanocube) with chemi-pure elite, bioballs, purigen and phosguard. I dose with C-balance and use Aquavitros Eight.Four as well as Julian Sprungs Reef Formula and Prime when necessary. I cycle every week and sometimes twice a week.
The tank currently runs a custom set of 12 Blue and 12 White LED’S built into the hood and I run a 300GPH powerhead in the tank. The tank has been cycled for over 6 months now and contains a variety of high-end zoas. I currently have one aussie acan, two favias and one birdnest sps to test out. All of the corals remain as close to the bottom of the tank to reduce the chance of bleaching.
No Crabs! Only snails. I will be putting in my cleaner shrimp tomorrow and will be purchasing a six-line wrasse later this week. The tank is almost completely barebottom, with only a little substrate since I have not wanted to move my acans yet.
For feeding I only use a mix of AquaVitros Fuel and Coral Frenzy. My question is, should I get different food for the new lps coming in or any other food beneficial to the tank. At the same time is there any need for new equipment in the future? The tank is small so would a protein skimmer be needed for the extra nutirents being put into the tank even if I am doing frequent water changes? Any advice would be appreciated.
My Param’s are:
Ph- 8.0
Nitrite- .10ppm
Nitrate- 0.0
Ammonia- 0.0
Calcium= 400ppm
Alkalinity- 11.0dkh
Mag- 1350ppm
Salinity-32
Specific gravity- 1.024

Is your nitrite really 0.1?

Also, I think you may be dosing a bit much for your tank. For my 55 reef, I do bi-weekly water changes and feed frozen foods even other day. My corals are doing awesome and I don't dose anything. This includes SPS, acans, zoas, and other assorted corals.

SeahorseKeeper, I have been dosing 2-3 times a week recently with no problems, but I've been wanting to cut down anyway so I'll prob go down to once a week. It did read .10ppm for nitrites, but this could be due to the close proximity that the test was taken with me using Prime.

My new shipment of acans came in. Should be able to upload some pics soon when they get situated

Acans like to be fed weekly. Mysis shrimp is one way to go. Skimmer is a must if you feed alot.
ftfy..

acans or any other photosynthetic corals do not NEED to be fed, though it may help growth.. I've only fed my acans once in three months, and they're doing great..

GHill762, I have heard that acans do not need to be feed often. However, I also heard that feeding Acans helps promote growth and overall health. The problem is not with my feeding, its with my lighting. I currently run a custom non-dimmable LED unit with 12 blues and 12 whites out of my aquapod. I have no shade in my tank since I have everything on my sand bed. My current lighting schedule is 8 hours; 2 hours blues, 4 hours blues and whites, and 2 hours blues to end it. I want to put as little stress on the new Acans as possible so any help on lighting would be appreciated
