I've got a 50g cube that has been running for nearly 8 months. Lighting is a Maxspect Ethereal running around 80%. I've got a few small SPS frags, zooanthids and a hammer coral that are all doing pretty well. Parameters are as follows:
N03- 2
P04- .03
PH- 8.15-8.3
Salinity - 1.025
Temp- 79
Last week while making a fish purchase on LA I saw that they had a good special on their "ultra" maxmia clams and I bought one. I didn't really pay attention to the size (rookie move) and ended up purchasing smallest size- under 2". I drip acclimated the clam and placed it in the tank on the sandbed. I tried to burp it but it remained closed throughout the process and I didn't see any obvious air bubbles. Here's a pic taken today:
After 2 1/2 days, it's gradually opening more and more, but still has hasn't done so completely. There's also an area that appears pinched, particularly on the lower-right hand portion of the mantle in the pic. There's also a section of the mantle that you can see in the upper-right hand portion that appears to be missing. I'm running a gyre on the system and there's a fair amount of flow. The side of the clam facing the flow is the one that's pinched somewhat. It is very reactive to light/movement and, even though I placed it on a rock on the sand, it has been moving itself around a fair amount on the sandbed looking for a place to set up. So wondering about a few things:
1) Is it unusual for a new clam, particularly the small ones, to take more than a few days to fully acclimate to a new tank and open fully?
2) Is the withdrawing of the mantle in that one area perhaps related to too much flow and, if so, will the claim get accustomed to this or does it need to be sheltered in some way? Or can this also just be a function of it still getting accustomed to the tank? Hoping that it's not PM.
3) The clam has somewhat of a washed-out look. Is this a function of its size or a result of shipping that will improve?
4) Is the missing portion of the mantle a problem and/or will it regenerate?
Thanks very much for any info!
