New maxima question..

Hey,

So I just picked up a Maxima today. Got it home,floated for a while then drip acclimated for about an hour. I put it in at the sand bed on a small rock and immediately had a nassarius all over it.

I started reading and found out about whelks which I tjink I may have based on what ive read. From my understanding they will actively kill and eat vs just eat something dying. I took the 2 I had out and placed them in my qt tank. Now some small hermits were over it. Clam is fully closed up and hasnt opened at all yet. I put it in as lights were going down so it hasnt had peak light yet.

Some people said hermits are just doing their thing and cleaning the shell but im thinking it doesnt sound good. Any ideas?

That doesn’t sound good, I’ve had nassarius along with clams and never had a problem. Where did you get the clam? Do they have a doa time/ policy? What are your parameters? Hopefully though they “were” just cleaning the shell, are they trying to get to the flutes? Any cleaners at the foot?

I got it @ reefapalooza today so its a final deal. Looked healthy there, although im still very new to clams.

Params are good- ammonia-0 nitrite-0
Nitrates almost 0 ph about 8 normally alk sits about 7. I know I just put it in and sometimes things take a bit to open up, just dont like the other critters all over it.

Any other nassarius in your tank? Try looking if anyone is going for it’s foot. If not hopefully it’ll just need time but mine usually opened within an hour or 2. What’s your cal, mag, and phosphates at?

How big is it? Whelks are certainly a problem. I’m untrusting of crabs personally, even if healthy but they seem to know something you don’t if they are that Johnny on the spot!

Well just woke up to watch the buffet! Saw a few hermits on it and then saw my green emeralds claw protrude from the inside out and gonna call it a wrap. Sucks really wanted a clam.

It was probably starting to die right when you purchased it. I have had nearly all of those creatures in my tanks and they do not bother a healthy clam (whelks, excluded), but they can smell death and will help themselves to a meal.

Wow that sucks, I was eye some clams at RAP but passed because they seem tiny and not really opened. Maybe call the store you got it from.

Yea I was bummed but its more my wife. She actually wanted the clam. Now its going to be hard to convince her to try again.
