long story short i used to have a 90 gal but moved and i couldnt bring it with nor have the time. im starting over with a brand new 125 gallon i recieved for free. (yes free i got lucky) I was looking for some input on my drawing I've seen a few people running these through the rear of their tank without boxes used outside the tank. mine in a see through tank and I only have room on the sides about 15" so I thought about a coast to coast setup. you can see the pics to understand. it's a 125 gallon. would this work and would it be quite? I'd also install gate valves to adjust flow. any input. thanks

I would look into to a hang on back overflow box. I think the way you have it in your sketch will be very noisy. How much space is in-between the stand wood and bottom side edge of the tank in that last photo? Your plumbing will need to fit through that somehow. Drilling the aquarium and installing an internal overflow is the safest solution but not everyone is comfortable drilling a tank.

see pic I've got 2-1/4" down low so plenty of space for pipes. I like the synergy ghost overflow but it's 16-1/4" wide outside box and of course I've got 15-1/2. I guess I could cut some out. I'm not afraid to drill the tank I figured I would anyways. thanks for the input. I just like that it would give me alot of surface skimming.

I'm sure you could thin up those supports for the canopy, it's not contributing to the tanks support. Maybe there is room on the middle of the side for an additional support if necessary and the overflow permits.

here's a pic from the other side identical just don't have the panel on yet

I saw the eshoppes overflow but haven't spoken to anyone with it and all I see are mixed reviews.

i drill holes in aircraft for a living.... i have tried to drill 2 tanks and the first one busted as i was drilling it... the second cracked 3 weeks after it was filled..... i will leave the drilling to the professionals now....

i got the same 125 gallon tank now and i have used an Eshoppes HOB overflow now for at least 11 years...

i made it almost fool proof by drilling some small holes in the u pipes and installing barbs with an air line to a toms aqua lifter pump... power goes out, the tank drains and when it starts back up the pump makes sure the overflow re starts....

i have only had 1 problem with it and that is when i didn't take out the u pipes and soak them in vinegar to get all the crud out of them....

2 or 3 times year i take out the whole box and soak it in vinegar..... small price to pay for not having a drilled tank...

you can tell from the canopy it has been running for a long time now... 2 years ago i had a kalk incident that killed my whole tank and it has been sitting dormant with just hair algae in it till 2 months ago when i decided to give it another go... this time without the DIY kalk reactor... im going back to 2 part

on an outage do you have any siphon issues, any noise and most of all do you like it?
If installed correctly you should have no siphon issues and mine is dead silent. Im able to turn off my return pump for water changes and then turn it back on and not have to do anything with the overflow. My mp10s make more noise than my overflow. Couple of tips if you do choose this overflow, it comes with a diamond drill bit and a template for where to drill the hole. On tanks with a black frame, put the template on the inside of the tank right up to the rim and drill from the inside of the tank out. Alot of people complain about low water lines with this overflow because they put the template on the outside, and because of the rim on the tank, the overflow gets mounted to low and your water line is well below the rim and can be seen. And drilling glass is a breeze. Ive never drilled glass before, but i drilled the overflow and the return on my current tank and it was suprisingly easy. Best bet is ti take the tank outside and emset it up off the ground, get a garden hose and run water where youre drilling. Hold the drill at a 90° angle to the tank, oull the trigger and let the drill do all the work, apply no pressure whatsoever. For your tank i would get the Eclipse L overflow and set it up bean animal style which is rated for 1000gph. Hope this helps :)
