Hello, my names Dennis and I just started a 30 gal salt water tank. I recently became interested in the saltwater life. That's all I got for you guy today, but I will be on everyday from 7-3p since I don't do much at work anyway. That's all I got for you guys for now. Hope to contribute to the forums sooner or later. But I got a lot to learn. Have a good one.

I had a freshwater tank for about 2 years now. But I just recently changed to salt water about 3-4 weeks ago.

Thats cool. I got 2 maroon clownfish and a yellow tangs. A snail and 4 scarlet hermit crabs.

Ill post a picture soon. Just need to wait for my wonderful rocks to come in. Need to make it look nice before i show off.

Welcome! I could be wrong, but don't you need a larger 50g tank for tangs? 30g is kinda small. But what do I know.. I'm new too lol and I just started a 30g a few weeks or so ago myself. Might want to see what others think, but won't the yellow tang outgrow the 30g?

Not sure either. But everything i bought so far i asked the people at the LFS. They said minimum 30gal for the tang. But as of right now i have 16gal left of space for fish. Plus i gave the fishes the benefit of the doubt in size. Even though their not that big yet.

I agree gemini9, I would not put tangs in any tank less than 70g and many tangs need much larger as they are open water fish. Dennis, a 30g is a great size for some of the blennies and gobies which have some of the greatest personalities of the sea. Most any of the clown fishes would be very happy too.

Sooo does that mean i cant have one? These fish store people trying to make money instead of helping me i bet.

Yeah I just googled yellow tang and it says you need a 100 gallon tank for a yellow tang. Remember they are just babies from the LFS. They will grow. My sister has a freshwater tank of 50 gallons and I bought her a Jack Damsey. He was tiny and cute at the fish store but that fish grew big time. I'd take the tang back and tell them they sold you a fish that will out grow your tank. But that's just me. Actually, before you do that you should pay them a visit first. Would suck to take the fish back to them and they refuse to accept it back.

I would never want to second guess the motives of the fish store folks, maybe they just didn't know. I used to work in a fish store and many years ago out of ignorance and and lack of knowledge I sold tangs to folks with smaller tanks.

Just out of curiosity, did you cycle your tank before adding your fish? You have to let your tank cycle for a few weeks before you can even put any fish in there.

1 month cycle. And last week was the end of 2nd month. So far everything is good and low. But ammonia was around .5 then jumped back to between 1.0 but less than 2.5 from what i know.

I do have a question about the lighting though. I have a t5 florescent Bulb. It has the "day light" and "midnight light" on. How long should i leave the light on for? My tank is high not the long ones. Couple people say 5 8 10hrs. But im still not sure. So ive been doing 7 hrs to be half way.
