Hello, my name is Jay and I reside in NE Ohio. My last reef experience was 27 years ago and did not end well...it ended so poorly that it has taken me 27 years to even consider trying again. I have done ALOT of youtube watching lately which is indirectly how I ended up here. The BRS Triton method videos opened up a whole new rabbit hole for me to fall down and after watching so many other videos I have decided to go with the Triton Method.

My problem is my LFS's really have not embraced the Triton Method or have no clue what I am talking about other than "I have heard of it but water changes are life" so I have nowhere to ask questions about really anything at this point.

So far I have placed an order for a 90g tank, a custom built acrylic stand, and a sump. I plan on using cheato in the sump with a kessle h380 in the refugium. I plan on using fiji pink live sand and some dry rocks and some live rocks.

I plan on a mixed reef with a moderate amount of fish, mostly LPS, and some SPS.

What I need input on is the following: Lighting, pumps, skimmers, powerheads, doseing pumps, vessles to hold the triton reactives, and do I need to run a carbon reactor?

I would like to use this thread to post a visual account of my new found way to spend money :)

Also i am not a complete noob with tanks and fish but my saltwater knowledge is from 25 years ago and quite outdated...after 100's of you tube videos I now know the sea slug dieing and giving off toxins is what probably killed my dream way back when.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jay and welcome to R2R!

I believe things have changed a lot but whatever you need to know just ask and everyone will help you out.

And when you get sorted start a build thread so we can follow along. And we need pictures!

You've come to the right place for any advice needed Jay. Lots of friendly members to help out and we hope you feel at home here.

Welcome to reef2reef! And welcome back to the hobby. Yes things have changed, but the old tried and true Berlin method is still a good starting point.

I've never tried the Triton method and many that have in time have abandoned it for simpler reef keeping methods.

It can be done if you have the time and patience to keep up with it.

First of all Welcome! I'm new to R2R too -- signed up in October. You and I have the same history it seems. You will love it here. I too had a reef tank twenty years ago, stepped away, and recently came back to it. I have indulged in many, many, many hours of YouTube videos and love the BRS series. I also feel your pain with lfs issues. You just have to keep looking until you find that one employee who knows what you are talking about and can offer suggestions. I've found a couple lfs employees in AZ who hold their salt (so to speak). It has taken many visits to stores but I know the schedules of my favorite staff members. Until then, this is a fantastic forum to ask questions. I'll let the more experienced folks answer your Triton method questions, they are far better resources than myself. Hang in there.
P.S. Get a start on your 90g build page. I can't wait to see your progress with it.

Welcome Jeight! Which LFS did you go to? Im in NE Ohio and frequent Blue Fish Aquariums and Triton Marine. Both of those places are awesome in our area. As far as the triton method, there is a vast resource of knowledgeable folks here on R2R that will help! Looking forward to seeing your build!
