Hello everyone, I found this site looking around for readings and such and decided this is the site I will join and try out. I typically don't post on forums but will read whenever I am looking for something or just reading for ideas and pictures.
I used to keep a fresh water tank years back, maybe 6-9 years back, it was a 55gal that did very well actually. My fish then consisted of 2 pleco, 1 parrot, 1 red belly pacu (was a terror), a blue lobster and a shovel nose cat ( a beast ). Tank did really good. Left the setup behind with my ex as she didnt want to let it go.
Anyway about 1.5 year back I inherited a Salt setup from my younger brother, a 35 Gal Hex setup that he was done with spending money with. He had attempted corals and some fish and failed and decided to give up on it.
It came with some live rock, a Blue face angel Juvenile, it had a flame angel but did not survive the move. So here i was with a tank i knew was not doing well, moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island. I left the blue face in a 5 gal bucket while I did a new setup with sea water bought from Petco. Filled it up, new sand mixed with his old sand cleaned out. acclimated the blue face and set him in. got a couple of damsels, small tomato clown and hermits and they were doing good for a long time.
I came across a 90 gal setup complete and decide to expand. Set up, bought new sea water from petco, used the existing water with the new water and transferred everything and everyone over. Tank looked really good and was doing very well for months. With all the new space i decided to visit another LFS and saw a nice Raccoon Butterfly Fish. Did my acclimating and set her in. My Angel and Domino Damsel seemed to be attracted to her, so much that they never left her side. Followed her all over the tank almost constantly. After about 15 days or so my angel started changing color, looking kind of faded. Since I have had him for so long i never thought he could be sick, he had survived poor keeping from my brother, a horrible move with no heat and still made it through and lasted about a year after all that. When I searched for Juvenile Angels changing, they looked similar so instead of being worried I was kind of excited to see him going through a change. Turns out he was sick.... only thing new was this Raccoon butterfly.... when i finally realized he was instead and not changing to adult, I applied meds to the tank.
My poor angel didn't make it. The raccoon butterfly lasted the meds, still was sick. LFS recommended Fresh water dips, the first dip took off a crap load of stuff from her. Her eye was still super puffed, a few days later another fresh dip, she didnt seem to like it much and looked all dizzy so i pulled her out immediately. she seemed to recover and i went back to the LFS i got her from and they gave me different meds... Few more days of that and she didn't make it past 5 days.
So I had a 90 Gal tank with 1 tiny tomato clown and 3 damsels.... Read on getting rid of ich other ways.. Raised the temp slowly till i hit 84 degrees F. I read should try to leave it for 20 days, i left it for about 45 days and did a partial water change. The 3 small fish looked all good at all times.
Anyway again it is over 45 days later... Temp is back down to normal 74-76...
I got ordered 2 Cleaner Shrimp, 1 Lawnmower Blenny and 1 Emperor Angel Juvenile from Petco.. ( they have 15 day guarantee vs local petco and LFS ).
Acclimated everyone for about 2-5 hours to be safe and placed them in there a few hours apart. The Angel was a little curious and after a day or so spent a lot of time hiding in one of my made live rock caves. Blenny, Damsels and Shrimp are doing great, even started growing a clean sponge. Angel started pooping long white strings although he was still eating very well... Few days later he stopped eating... on 2nd day of no eating I set up a QT, 30 Gal Nano Cube. Put 1 rock in there for him and have been treating him with Para Shield for about 7 days so far, he is past his 3rd dose as recommended. One day i saw a red haired looking worm on the floor of the tank,(Scooped it out), i didnt see him pass this but there is no sand and no where really for it to have come from... Plus he has been eating extremely well now... been a few days since the last dose, his color is great, he swims all over tank comes up for food as if he is asking for it and all. I will give it a couple more days and place him back in the DT.
I check my parameters 2-3 times a week, shrimp have molted twice, they are super excited for feeding time. Damsels are the same, the blenny i see him pecking at rock every so often but never see him any excited for the algae pellets i throw in for him. I cannot confirm if he eats them or the shrimp find it and eat them as well but he's been in there for a while and looks good, active and again i see him pecking rocks here and there.
So after reading, I never actually found that Para shield can help internal parasites, but again, that worm had to have come from him.. and hes been eating ever since extremely well, even asks for food.
So 1 question I have... With any new fish, I am planning to just put them into the QT and dose them with Para shield or Prazipro before even introducing into my DT.
Anyone think this is a bad idea? or have other recommendations ?
Thanks !
