New member with cycle question.

Hey don't want to hijack Someone's thread saw this post made an account hope someone could help me out with a smiler problem my tank is 20g have idk how much pounds of rocks but mixed between live rocks and dead rocks equal 50/50 if say it's been two weeks but I did use dr Tims bio-Spira and vitro seed I know it's a lot but you can't over dose ammonia and nitrite went to zero tank cycled phew but two days later I add a friends coral from his tank to mine and I drip acclimated and everything got a crew in cleaning the mess up that showed up but my corals look all burnt and yes I did to a30% water change before I put them in tested the water and yes I am using API id say my test for Ammonia is between .25-.50 I'm not sure for the rise but worried for my corals nitrite also rose to 1 but nitrate is still at 10 could it be my lights they aren't 12 inches from the tank they're 8 it's the galaxy hydro or maybe it's the light or it's the Ammonia

Welcome Zaxsaid,

Is it possible to post an image of the corals. If those values for ammonia and nitrite are correct that would be the likely cause.
Move the corals down just to make sure for now that it's not the lighting. If the corals did not come from a tank using similar lighting the corals may need to be acclimated to your lighting.

Here is a picture crew is doing good I put the corals in two different locations one in the direct light and the other in note if s shaded area both look terrible could it be the ammonia or could they be he ones releasing the ammonia

Well that is a pretty shallow tank, the corals may have needed some acclimation.

It's a great start though.

It looks like your friend have you some paly or zoanthids?

If you can get some Microbacter 7 and use as directed to assist in establishing a larger biological filter.

Kinda don't want to lose these guys care a whole lot about them anything I can do for them I've already used dr Tims bio Spiro and Vitro dr Tims I heard great thing about his products and the other two where recommended by the LFS yes they're button paly

does your live rock have any of the coralline and age indicators we pictured in our cycling thread, it looks like it does. that rock above doesn't look like bone white startover rock, unless these blue lights are confounding the pic

the fact you have any life whatsoever now fully excludes any ammonia testing at all. we treat this tank as fully cycled, even if its not, to avoid loss. that's not very hard to do (store no waste, feed easy, change water nicely, give it ramp time for another mo) post a full tank shot standing back if poss

Those are palys, it will be hard to kill them. They'll be mad for awhile but should recover.

Do some small water changes, 2-4 gallons for a couple days. Move that piece to an area with less intense lighing.

Dr.Tim products are fine.

Zax is a new friend of mine down here. He's using bio spira for a bacterial supplement.

and you should turn down the light as they need to acclimate to that as well.

IMO you have plenty of rock and sand, you may re consider your aqua scape though as you want to make sure you have good flow all over.

The mars aqua according to many owner and use repots Par/lux charts is capable of 1000 par at about 14 in. so you can seriously smoke them.
I would mix it to a color you like and run the highest knob at only 20 or 30%

Here is a picture lights off they were white but most of the white rocks have become brown the ugly phase lol I turned down the lighting to 25 on both Blue and white the clean up crew are in there they look fine going about their business eating pretty much everything any photos let me know anything to help them I will be doing a water change right now of 5%

Also aqua scaping I'm not done with yet because the look of it doesn't look that nice to me I'm still trying to get that perfect position

In a tank that shallow id guess 15 to 20,000 lux to acclimate.
20,000 lux devide by 60(as safe lux/par coversion)= 300 par at the top

Dr tims ok, and that coral w likely be ok

The snail or two harmless. Change water well for the next month or two and enjoy having something to watch while it matures just don't add more stuff for a while, feed a little.

Alright thanks seriously thought I was done with the cycle everything was good even my readings were 0 still don't know what caused the spike in not in a rush so I'll continue to test the water and will get another test kit for ammonia and nitrite see if they're really up or if they're 0 also is my lights good where they are or should I raise them higher

Yeah haha don't want to put another coral through the experience These guys are going through probably this time next month I'm just a little concerned about my test kit if it's not a good one what's the best test kit to use? Don't want anymore test showing the wrong things anymore
