I think I'm a bit afraid to go much bigger because I'm not sure how complicated it'll be.

Don't be, they aren't more complicated, just more of whatever you are doing. Honestly, I think the larger ones are sometimes easier because you have more room to work with and install equipment under them.

If you go with 50g I'd suggest looking at 50 gallon breeder tanks. It's a nicer footprint size then the 55g normal tanks I think.

Plus, the 55s are almost always tempered, and can't be drilled for installing overflows or return lines.
