New Morph: Vampire PE's

True PPE have a green mouth and Watermelon striped on the body.

Here is a quote from this article: A R2R Spotlight: "People Eaters" (PE)

"When the question of "Is it a PE, or not" comes up and the mouth is not a 100% indicator the hobbyist can also check their closed polyp for the watermelon like white striations that are existent on the outside of the polyp."

Very cool paly Its not just the mouth, PE's have thicker/shorter skirts, and more stocky polyps in general. Sweet paly anyway, we're just nit-picky. ;]

The green mouth can be found in several non-PE type zoas but is not the only qualification required to be part of the "PE group". The PE name was derived from the PPE, but was later adopted for those polyps that are part of the "Zoanthus gigantus" group.

So, if your polyp has the green mouth and the vertical stripes on the outside of the polyp, then it may be part of the PE group (Z. gigantus). I have yet to see a true PE polyp that does not meet the above qualifications.

odd I just looked at those same pic's on another site. Hmmm??

I see what you guys are saying about not being a PE by your definition. However, the green mouth is so prevalent in these not to be a PE. Can it be called a Vampire Eater?

What are you implying? I'm not allowed to visit other forums?

you are allowed to go where ever you want I didn't know it was posted by the same person
for a minute I thought I was seeing double:)
they are very nice by the way!

You can call it what you want, A green mouth does not make a paly/zoa a PE. THere are several things that make up a PE. A green mouth is just one of the attributes. I just think this should not be classified as a PE since it does not have all characteristics of a TRUE PE

Ok ok. It's just a name. I'll change it to Vampire Paly.

It's a gorgeous, nasty zoanthid no doubt. Vampire Slayer would be more to my taste, lol. I think I saw some "campfire" polyps with the green mouth but clearly not a PE. On a similar line of discussion, there are many polyps called "palys" when they are actually Zoanthus specimens/morphs/... big don't make it a paly! To me, "paly" should be reserved for species in the Palythoa and Protopalythoa genera.

whats sad is how this whole post is about the name and not how awesome the coral is...it seems like more and more now days people are only interested in the name and not the actual coral...:(

Akwarius-that is a very sweet looking paly! do you have a good size colony of it?

I think it's clear everyone loves this polyp and has stated such; it's awesome and I'd love to have a few in my collection. Would you prefer to see "very nice" "thanks" repeated over and over? It hasn't been about the name at all but about a little corrective guidance on the use of the term "people eater", hopefully it's enlightened a few reefers on zoa taxonomy.

I understand and appreciate the feedback. The most important descriptor to me was always the "vampire" part.

If they had a nice bright colored skirt(red, blue, yellow, orange), I might like them more. Looks brown to me. On a scale of 1-10, I give them a 5

I respectfully disagree. The black/brown skirt makes them look more sinister. Maybe not a "10" for color, but def a "10" for uniqueness.
