Found a used 8g Biocube. It had PC lights and moons that were not working and the fans sounded like chainsaws...quite pleased!!!! This means MODDING!!!

In all my searching I found some good ideas, but have to plan my goal b4 I go doing things.
First things first, fill it and see what it does!
I did and I wasnt pleased either....Who Made these dumb things??? For one...the fact that there is an intake at the bottom of the tank means NO DSB...at least not without covering the hole, This was my first note on my to-do list.
Next thing was the top "overflow" Of course the dust the tank had collected floated around in a circle...pushed to the center rather than skimmed..SO That is the NEXT Note.
Now, I am not a fan of filtration methods involving sponges, biomedia, what ever...I dont even like chemipure, although it did show no harm to my tank. so The next step will be Fuging..Scraping the paint off the glass and propping a light behind it...cut some egg crate, throw in a macro...sounds easy, so that will be added to the list as well.

Return pump...Right...Its a beefed up aqualifter...UPGRADE!!! I am thinking of using the MJ900 like every one uses, but I may see what the 1200 does first since I have one. I like zoos and gorgonians, so High flow is my goal. As for skimmer...ehh..water changes oughta do it in an 8 gallon right? Im not doing any more than 2 tiny fish if I even do add any. I may do inverts only, Idk...i still have to move. My girlfriend wants to kill me because of this, but WOO!!! More room for corals to grow, sell, and, Stare at endlessly.

WELLLLL...I was sitting here, well over there ---> and got to thinking about all these people modding these little guys...adding sumps, hob refugiums, doorbells.....and than i was thinking about The 8 gallon sump I traded for the cube....They are essentially exactly the same thing...only the cube has a display area. WHICH FINALLY GOT ME THINKING....Why not use the cube as a sump with a nice display refugium???? The lights were shot, the LEDS i added were on hand extras for my 10g.. I even have a 6500k bulb as a spare for my mangroves.....so Why dont I put a drilled 10g above it...plumb the [then upgraded] return pump from chamber 1 (the overflow) to the 10g and the overflow into chamber 3, which may need the hole modded into a rectangle so it spills into the display? Something different and would work out well with the slots on the bottom of the wall. the water in the display would dictate the evap level and would also make it last a whole weekend if you go out lol.

I will try it with some Tap when I move, this is just documenting the Idea so i dont forget and if someone else wants to try it.

heres what it looks like as i tinker

What livestock you looking to add?

well I am thinking of doin all zoanthids for corals since I have a good variety that i sell in my frag tanks...unless i find some strawberry anemonies...than i may just do them since i killed the last one by thinking it was something else :/

as for inverts: i want a turbo, a pencil urchin, and some little speed demon antennae racer snails. For crabs, i have one giant hermit who does so well with my corals he might just get his own condo. I bought him at petco 2 years ago and now he is massive, but doesnt eat my stuff!

Fish...eh..this ones hard. 8 gallons seems a bit small to me, but a type of clown goby maybe??? im not sure, i never really looked into Minimum Capacities for fish since i knew my 150 was good enough for the ones I bought. Some people said a clownfish would be fine...but really? 3 inch fish in a 1 foot tank...sounds rude on my behalf. I have a purple striped dotty back who is with my frags, he might go in there for a bit until i sell him, sucker is meaner than my late damsel Sgt Major Debo..who now lives in fish heaven due to rocket propulsion from the tank. I think he thought he was a wright brother.

What would even go in an 8 gallon? a bamboo sharks parasite population would probably even over crowd it haha.

Warlock trivecton falken is the point of the bottom slots? The only good thing i noticed was taht when filling the tank, if i poured through the overflow, it would spill out the bottom of the wall into the display, thus preventing sand from going everywhere...other than that, i dont get it. it doesnt help the pump if water is too low..would it be a bad idea to glue it shut?

well.....i had a leak in my 10g so I had to move everything from my frag tank into the biocube. I wasnt exactly setup for extra cables, so I situated the cube slightly higher than my display, added a u tube to the overflow chamber, then took an mj900 from the display to the biocubes original spray hole. I guess in a way I have an 8g biocube with a 150g sump that has a 55g sump.

Macaroni! thats probably the most water any biocube 8 has seen lol.
Pics soon to come.

overkill? yes of course!

Looks good. Your like a mad scientist. What is the black hose going into the fuge/other tank?

@ bige: Are u talking about the hose that comes off the tee in pics 1 and 2?

If so, that is the hose that is start the siphon with, I intend on adding an aqualifter thingy, or at least a check valve.
It is actually not routed any where but between the tanks, I have a plastic bolt keeping the hole closed, along with a kink in the hose until I make it to the lfs for a check valve.

I have a pump from big tank into slightly elevated cube. That frankensiphon is from the overflow in the cube then into the big tank, dangling in a non appealing manner.

I would definitely say that people that buy a cpr overflow are wasting a lot of plastic. Lol. I don't think they realized the cube has one BUILT IN! All u need is an external box and a tube. Ok, maybe the cpr is not that much plastic, but why spend on something u have already?

I agree, I am a mad scientist. I cannot just have a simple system. My reasoning...the earth is complex and if there was a way to make a system that went from fresh to marine with terrainand polar ice caps I would. I'm doing this for the good of fishmanity...the reefs are not going to help themselves and if I can make something insane, that just might do be the ticket. I mean we made wolves into a trillion kinds of mongrols...we should be able to mimic earth by now. :D.
