New Orbit Marine Pro vs previous generation Orbit Marine.

So, this may have been done before, but I wanted to share a test I just did as I continue to learn more about lighting.

I bought the 18-24" Orbit Marine LEDs in 2015. I was unaware of the pro model at the time. I ran them with some Ecoxotic stunner strips I had put into a homemade light strip. They worked fine.

Last May, I tried to order a second set to retire the stunner strips and they were discontinued. Instead, I ended up getting the newer incarnation of Marine Orbit Pro. Things really took off then.

I went from a 36 bowfront to a 20-long (long story) so I have been trying to adjust these lights to see how I like them. I noticed that the older model was not as strong as the Pro, which is to be expected. There are no burned out LED's yet, but I also noticed the Pro has some RGB LED's as well. I have been running the same program with the same intensity since one remote will adjust both controllers.

Tonight I downloaded a Lux meter for my phone. I know they aren't the most accurate, but it was enough to do what I wanted to. I put my phone on the floor with the app running and put the older strip at 100% white and ramped up to 100% blues on the edge of the table but held it where it was hanging over. This is roughly a distance of 30". The older lights had a Lux reading of 680.

Then I took my newer Pro version and carefully placed it at the same height. It was only on about 30% whites. I adjusted the intensity until I got as close as I could to 680. I managed to hit 686 and I was surprised that my white intensity was only 39%!

So, when I have been trying to adjust my white spectrum to maximize growth and minimize algae growth, I was underpowering the older model to keep the percentages the same. Lesson learned. Now I am going to try to set my newer version for growth and try to match the older one as close as I can. Maybe it will make a difference, and maybe it won't, but I just thought I would share.

Again, this may be a 'duh' post, but I am still learning a lot about lighting.

Just curious are you sure you have the orbit marine pro the model 4117 that’s is in your picture. Because that doesn’t have an rgb led it has a magenta red only. There is a huge huge difference between model 4117 the second picture and the first picture. The first picture is closer to the newer ic loop orbit marine and lower than the ic marine pro which is their newest light. The model orbit marine pro 4114 4117 are still their super powered lights. Current usa is also releasing a new version of model 4117 possibly this spring.

FYI 4114 and 4117 reference the 72 inch not the 18-24 but they are identical except lengths.

But this is a picture of what I received. It's the left one. You can see the reddish reflection better in the second picture. While it is different, they sent me identical remotes and control panel as the first one, and not the remotes shown on the Amazon link.

Definitely one of the smaller versions of the 4114, and I would suggest probably turning the back light to just blues.
Do not under estimate that new light, the red is a magenta this model doesn’t have the rgb (red green blu mixed led). Setting three has been the best for me but I turn the whites down to 31%. You will need to adjust that for your depth, and n would place that light in the center with the other on blues only in the back. That light is extremely powerful compared to what is next to it.

The link also doesn’t give the correct light we are speaking about that is the new ic marine light. Definitely not the 4117 version

It is model 5110 which does show up as the IC. IF so, it appears they sent me the old controller and remote to the standard Orbit. I don't think I'm missing any features since I don't have a Loop system.

As for placement. I can't place it in the middle because of that black strip of plastic that joins my glass lid halves. When I turn down the back light to only blues, my Cyphastrea is in the dark. I'm just trying to match the back one with the front so it seems I have even coverage.

Do you still have the stunner strips? Did you happen to have the clip on reflectors that were introduced later for the stunner strips by ecoxotic? I'm looking for 3 of the 12" reflectors (Model #5020)
