After a single heater failure in a 3 gallon (that was already giving me problems, to be fair), I've come to the conclusion:
This new version of the tank will not have a heater.
The smell when you come home to a tank that is over 100°F after a long day of work and a rough commute is not worth it. So no. No more heater in that tank. The room the tank is in is typically in the mid 60-low 70°F range, depending on what game I'm running on my pc. I'm assuming a fair number of macroalgaes will be fine, I've got a bit in there already to try and deal with the ammonia that's inevitably getting released, though I'll switch what I have out to more attractive arrangements/types after the worst is done. When things stabilize a bit, I might try some zoas as well. Any other ideas for corals that can handle the chill? I figure I'll give them 2 months to have adjusted to the cooler water, and if they don't work (and I have room) I'll move them to my heated 2 gallon.
Likely won't have livestock past a few snails I'm guessing - my margarita snail/s might actually do better there.
Somewhat hilarious that my SW journey is looking an awful lot like my FW journey - I don't use heaters on those either! Never had problems with heaters, I just don't like equipment. No, I can't really explain that.
