I set up a QT for a sick clown for the first time. I have a 10g with heater, airsrone and a powerhead. Is there anything special I should do or need? I assume water changes every few days? I also treated the tank with general cure today but my fish also seems to have a vision problem. Can i also treat the tank with erythromycin to try and treat her eye?

Thanks

A HOB filter. I prefer Aquaclear brand. Soak the foam pad in something like Biospira. Add a mesh bag of ceramic material like Fluval's BioMax and soak it with Biospira.

A Seachem Ammonia alert badge. To view the badge, use a small flashlight to light the badge from behind. This will illuminate the badge very clearly.

If just one eye is cloudy looking, it's probably an injury. Can treat with 1 tablespoon of plain USP epsom salts to 5 gallon of tank water. Can re dose a couple of days later.
If both eyes are infected you can use erythromycin but be prepared to do some water changes. It can be very harsh on a tank's bio filter.

@Big G Thanks for the replying. I have a couple other threads floating around with more info about the fish. I dont really know what is wrong with her yet. She has slowly been declining for maybe 4 to 5 months to the point where she is really malnourished now. I cant see anything wrong w her eye but she isnt able to see food when its near her unless its below her. At first i thought she may have injured her eye or was going blind but now im not sure. I just moved her to QT sunday thinking maybe she has some sort of internal parasite and maybe some other secondary infection. Im really not sure. I left microscope pics in another thread with no real answers. Here are a couple pics of her in the qt. Ive tried many MB dips, a fresh water dip last week and she is now in a QT with GC and i may add erthyromicin. Im at a bit of a loss.

@Big G i forgot to ask. You said erythromycin was tough on a tanks biofilter, but she is in a barebottom QT so how would that apply?

Oh yea this fish has been in my dt for at least 3 or 4 years and all other tank mates are healthy.

Could be a couple of things that can happen. The most common would be possible more frequent water changes to maintain water quality. The second could be bacteria/algae blooms. For the first, be prepared for water changes more than normal; the second would be a problem that can be addressed with a UV filter. I've used the small version of the Mean Green Killing Machine (3 watt in my 20 QT). Works pretty good. Just keep an eye on the foam filter. It's very small and can get full of gunk and really slows down the amount of water it processes. You want it to move the water slowly in front of the UV bulb, but too slow doesn't do enough "killing". And that makes it a problem as well because you don't want to run carbon, skimmers, and UV when dosing with meds. Arrgh. It's a balancing act for sure.

@Big G in your post earlier you mentioned that you used the mean green uv steralizer on your qt. How do u like that does it work well enough to use in a dt on an as needed basis? I have a small bloom of dino and Ive never had dino or a uv in 15 years so im apprehensive to spend big dollars on one when i doubt i would run it full time. What do u think since u have one? Thanks

The one I have is very small and perfect for a 20 or smaller. They are pretty popular with people who are doing "ich management".

Yea i would have to get a bigger model since my dt is a 100g. I was worried bc some peole were basicaly saying u had to buy one of thr 3 or 400$ models or the salt water would melt them and they would start leaching plastics into your water. I just want to use it as needed so I couldnt see spending that kind of money for one but I also didnt want it melting down in my tank;) @Big G
