Hey everyone just had one question I just started my new nano 28g with live rock trying too cycle new tank and sand and rock I am one week and a half in running the lights about 6 hours a day everything has been runing great wanted to test everything on the new tanks pumps and all.
I ordered this little starter kit of ebay one large purple coraline alge disc, one little clump of green cheto, one little bag of live sand with copapode in it, do not no if all that sounds right Remmeber I am Brand new to the saltwater tank. But put all this in and purple began to pop up all over good but out of no were 3 days ago this ugle brown stringy alge started growing on the sand then on the corals now its geting over every where, so read artical I turn the lights on and in hours in doubles in size soo I am keeping lights off for now, I am just wondering is this normal for the cycling prosess or is there a chemical I need to get that can nock this out. Dye off has not happened yet looks like it may take a few weeks.
Just need to get this brown stuff under controll Thanks any advise would help Saltydog22:sad::cry:

It's normal after cycling. Keep nutrients low with skimming or water changes (both) and it should pass. If you have months from now then you have other issues to look into. The tank usually goes from cycle to diatoms to cyano to hair algae to coraline.

As stated above just a diatom bloom, completely natural with a new tank. It will clear up on its own.

Hey Thanks for all your help

Hi everyone sorry so late geting back. 1 week has passed cense last post to answer all questions. Thur. July 12, 2012 my tank has been cycling for 3 weeks. I took some advice and turned lights off it worked great brown alge has reduced GREATLY!!!! when I posted Nitrite level was 2.0 maybe 5.0 real close. Sun July 8 Retested all results were High Ph 8.0 looks a little low not sure why? Ammonia 0 , Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0. Sooo
What does all that tell me everything looks good but my live rock has had almost no die off and still does not look good or what it should look like. I called the Aquatic Connection where I bought it from they said it could be another 3 weeks. Ok thats not to big of a suprise, but I was just wondering would it be ok to may help tank out by stopping by local reef shop pick up some cleaner snails, to kinda help clean up brown alge, and help with cycling process?? Thanks and look for my pictures of my set up in a future tread maybe in 3 days !!! Thanks Saltydog

Sounds like the tank cycled as long as you a
saw an ammonia spike followed by nitrite and nitrate then back to o you should be good. I would get a cleanup up crew to start working on the nasties in the tank. Make sure to acclimate them well. Your on your way

welcome to r2r. sounds like your tank has finished cycling get a clean up crew and drip acclimate any livestock you plan on adding

What they said ^^ get a CUC and an emerald crab. Nudibranch's will mow down hair algae as well. But keep an eye on it, when they die they really **** everything in the tank off.
