New Red Sea reefer 200 . Noisy !

Hi guys!
Just set up my new reefer 200. I’m a little confused as to how much water is suppose to be in the overflow? I think it may be too low and that’s why I’m getting so much gurgling noise up top ? Any help would be appreciated!!

also what is the valve for in the sump? How do I use it ? Thank you!

The valve is for adjusting the water level in your tank and overflow (and eliminating the noise). Make small incremental turns (1/4") to close the valve, waiting 30 seconds between adjustments. When the water in the overflow reaches the edge of the emergency overflow pipe - stop.

It’s hard to tell as I don’t have a 200 but your water level in the sump might be high. If you turn off your return pump make sure water doesn’t overflow in the sump and you will be fine.
You can also adjust the return pump speed to assist with the balance but Blaxsun has it covered above.

I have the 200. Bring the overflow water a little higher than that hole in the big tube to get rid of gurgling. To do so you’ll need to close the valve in the bottom about 1/4 each time

pwait a bit and see what each adjustment did. It’s very touchy. But you don’t want it to start flowing into the emergency drain

Pipe in the center is your emergency drain you want the water level to be right at the top of that pipe. That way the shorter pipe will be under a full siphon. Just slowly close that valve above your sump until that happens.

Okay because this morning I started to add water and nothing was happening … instead the sump was increasing in water to the point that it was 2 inch from the rim. I ended up taking water back out

so instead of adding anymore water… I need to slowly start closing the valve 1/4 each time until it raises on its own in the overflow area correct?

I was just messing around with it and originally I had the valve opened full. I just spent 15 min slowly closely and honestly I don’t see much of a difference? It’s nearly half way closed now and still nothing . Is yours nearly fully closed ??

I have the 'new' g2 version you've pictured, and I was surprised at the amount of turns it took before the water flow actually began to noticeably change. Probably at least 10+ full 360deg turns before I found the 'fine adjustment' range/area

I have a 250 and I have to close mine almost all the way. Close it completely and slowly open until you get the level you want. As long as it's below the big red pipe you're fine.

I’m 1 year in with a RS peninsula (bigger than your picture, same issues). Here’s my simple guide to making the noise less:

looking at the drain from the top tank there are two causes to the noise:

1. water draining too fast. Will look like a whirl pool in the main drain and a lower water level. Close the valve (clockwise) a bit, wait a minute. Same noise? Do it again.

2. water draining too slow. It is pouring down the overflow pipe (second smaller one) making a racket. Open the drain more (counter clockwise) to let more into sump. wait a minute. Same noise? Do it again.

as others have said, make sure there isn’t too much water already in there (don’t walk away while doing these adjustments). You’ll get the hang of it.

keep turning the water value in line from the pipe down to your sump until the water level in your overflow is above the main drain and JUST at the emergency drain. I can tell by that original picture that you are sucking down a lot of air and that is the source of your problem.

Old thread but just set my 250 G2 up and it’s super loud in the overflow. So I will try this and see if it works.
