so I got a new Red Sea rsk 600 for my first tank

It’s at about 6.5 inches of water

It will not settle down and is making a huge mess

I watched videos on you tube people said there’s was some freaking out at 15 minutes.

I’m on day 2!

What am I doing wrong?

Did you completely wash and rinse the unit out prior to placing in the system?

I've had mine for about 2 weeks ... first skimmer I got on with.

Your water level is a bit low (by 1")

Have you tried a water change?

What skimmer did you have before?

Brand new filter socks?

First skimmer first tank. No I didn’t wash it before I put it in?
Directions did not mention anything like that and I am a noob

Directions say 7 inches of water so I made a stand for it Out of acrylic

If I gave it more weather depth it’s even more out of control

This is rediculous , I should of bought the DC one
This was not a cheap skimmer

I would turn the control as far in the "-" direction as you can and open the drain hose back into the sump (to reduce the mess) and let it run

Mine took a few days to settle

You chose a good skimmer ... stick with it

If it doesn't settle in 2-3 more days do a water change

It’s been as far — as possible since I started I have the drain hose wide open just running back to the sump

Thanks for the suggestions

What kind of rock did you put in DT?

If you used a dry “ready rock” like Carib Sea life rock this will happen for the next 3-4 weeks. Posting from my experience. LFS warned of it and said not to even bother trying turning on skimmer for 2 weeks. I turned it on once a week until the the glorious day where it actually started operating correctly. It was actually pretty exciting lol.

Nothing is in the tank

No stock

And according to Red Sea I must run the skimmer

Yes it’s Carib Sea life rock

Reef mature kit says you need your skimmer because of the items being dosed

I have a whole mother thread on that and the debate on if I needed a skimmer with this kit for cycling which is why I bought the stupid thing

Now regretting it

Nothing to regret about the choice of skimmer

Based on the latest info I would turn it off .... your tank is full of chemicals no wonder the skimmer is crazy ... give a couple of weeks

It’s the life rock. No matter which skimmer you purchased this would happen. Let it run if the reef kit said it needs it there is no harm in doing so just take the cover off the to so it will make less of a mess. It is oxygenating the water at least. Patience, you would need it eventually.

Not used the Red Sea maturation stuff ... but patience is definitely the key

Side note

I just dosed a few things today per the kit.
Shut it down for a while until those items settle

I think it’s your filter socks.

Run them through washer before putting them in tank.

If it's the RedSea filter sock, it may be nylon mesh, which you don't want to run through your washer.
