Hi Everyone!

I'm new to reef-keeping, though in the past I've kept a saltwater fish only "ocean tank" and plenty of freshwater planted tanks. Recently got permission and the budget to build out a new tank, it's been about a decade since I've kept anything salty.

Because its been so long, I've been doing tons of research, trying to figure out what might be the best tank, setup, equipment, etc for me. I mean, I haven't even settled on a tank size and I've been jumping back and forth between a 70gal and a 120gal.

Outside of the tank, I'm a hardware engineer and IT guy. There'll be lots of smart integration with this one!

I'm Crabs Mcjones, welcome to R2R and thank you for signing up! Any questions please feel free to ask, were all here and willing to help. Definitely go as big as you're comfortable with. 120 is a great size to start with :)

Wow, that was a lot, and fast.

Bigger is better!
Look forward to picking up some IT pointers!

Figure out what kind of coral and especially fish you want to keep. That'll help you decide what tank size is the needed!
Feel free to ask away!

As for coral and fish, well I'm leaning towards fewer fish. Maybe a pair of bar goby/Dartfish, maybe a firefish, I saw a beautiful royal basslet at an LFS so that's probably on my list too, and the wife would love an eel (snowflake eel most likely, but I have my doubts). Regardless, I'm a big fan of inverts, abalone definitely, clams, crabs (arrow crab? fan crab!) and urchins, so they're on my stock list.
Corals? Softies and mushrooms. I'll be around to take care of the tank most of the time, but there will be instances where I'm traveling for work for 2-weeks. Luckily I've got a good tanksitter, but they're not gonna adjust dosing or chems, they just feed and clean the glass.

Welcome home, you will love it here!

Keep us posted with your build with lots of photos! :)
