I'm a 54 year old husband, father, grandfather etc.. I'm a computer network engineer working for our community college district office. For fun and exercise, I love to play roller hockey with a great group of guys and gals at bakersfieldrhc.com.
I'm really looking forward to joining this community. I've already researched, designed, and built a stand, sump, plumbing, and controller for the start of a 75 gallon reef tank. Here's a link to some general start to finish tank build photos. I didn't mean to add that last photo of my 37 gallon tank at this time, but I didn't feel like going back and removing it. I got 37 gallon tank from a friend of mine who was retiring it after 15 years; I wanted the live rock to seed my new 75 gallon, so I keeping it running until I can move the inhabitants to their new home.
I'm going to rely heavily on this community to help me get the tank cycled and tweaked; any advice and/or constructive criticism is always welcome.
My goal is to build a mixed reef tank with a deep sand bed. I've heard all kinds of pros and cons for going with a deep sand bed, and I decided that I'm willing for the cons. I like the idea of a more natural biological filtration system. I will be paying very close attention to water quality. I'm sure I'll make some mistakes, but I'm in it for the long hall. Although I'm new this, I believe the adage that I've heard quite often in my research "nothing good happens fast" when it comes to reefing.
I'm not a carpenter, plumber, or electrician but I love DIY projects. This wood working project was the first I've done since high school, so if anyone is interested in the mistakes and pains I went through to build this stand, please let me know. I've noticed in most of the DIY videos and discussion groups that I've seen, rarely is there any discussion on the find details, and has you know "the devil is in the details" it was a fun and frustrating project; I wish I could build another stand, it would be awesome
