Hello everyone,

I am a new reefer as of 4 months and 13 days ago.
I have always wanted to try a saltwater aquarium but I was always put off by a large amount of information I needed to do it right.
Well, just recently I made up my mind to give it a try. what the heck, I said.

My setup is a 55-gallon tank with no built-in plumbing. I honestly did not weigh the amount of rock and sand I put in there but if I had to guess, I'd say 30-ish lbs.

My tank inhabitants so far are listed below:
2 Halloween Hermit Crabs
10 dwarf hermit crabs
2 cerith snails
2 trochus snails
2 nasarrius snails
1 nerite snail

1 bumblebee gobi (normally sold as brackish water only fish)
2 saddle-back black n white barred clownfish
1 sailfin blenny (lawnmower)
2 peppermint shrimp (1 is banished to the sump for eating my coral)

1 bam-bam orange zoa
1 candy cane coral (6 heads)
1 GSP coral

I am currently battling hair algae in my display. I tried a 72-hour blackout with little effect. I am dosing vibrant once a week for the last 5 weeks, but again little to no effect.
I recently put in a protein skimmer and upped my water changes from 10 to 15 gallons each week.

Overall I am loving the hobby.

Good to meet all of you.

So, here's some more of that information for ya! First of all, Welcome! Second, pictures are gonna be your best best friend when posting. I for one don't believe your battling hair algea, I would say diatoms due to your tank being new and still establishing its bacterial independence. Don't worry about not having plumbing in your 55 gal, I have a duetto HOB ATO, and an aquamaxx HOB "refugium" and skimmer. Works like a dream, especially when you remove the media canister they give you and put in a innovative marine filter sock. I know every tank is different l, however, I never "treated" any infection or nuisance algea for at least 2.5 years. I got fish and other things to help me fight those battles. Another statement, since you don't have much going on I'm your tank, crank your lights down, whether it's your duration or intensity, you also didn't mention what lights your running, Temp, "parameters". All this stuff will help us folks lead you in the right direction. Good luck! Hope to chat with ya soon.
