I just ordered my first reef tank. Its a RedSea 525 reefer. It comes with a glass sump which I have heard mixed opinions on. I did order a vortech m1 for the original sump but after watching and seeing some other tanks I am possibly looking to set up a filtration system in my basement and run the plumbing to the tank and have a sump on a bigger scale. I am green as they come in the hobby, and this is my first tank. No corals, no fish no nothing. Is this something that is hard to do and what kind of pumps do I need to be able to push the water that far? I am looking for basic ideas and experience and is this even a good idea?

Congrats on your first tank and nice choice by the way. I'm not sure about setting up with the sump in the basement but I know people have successfully done it. I'm following along to watch and see what people are using.

First welcome aboard! Wow Nice tank for your first. I would just get what you have WORKING first. To do a remote sump system is not a novice thing and a lot of work, expense & time. But if thats what you want the folks here will help you every step of the way. Good luck

I think you will need powerful pumps to push water up from a basement but hopefully some one who’s done it will help.

It's not hard. Did that years ago. Biggest issue is to properly measure distance and curves to determine head pressure. Then go a bit bigger than that especially if you want a manifold. DC pump is the way I would go so I could regulate output. Easy. Not really something requiring reef experience mostly plumbing issue.

Welcome... congrats on an awesome tank! Personally I would start w what came w as far as sump. Redsea sumps are great! Do a bunch of research on here and take things slow and you will have a lot of fun and learn as you go as we all do. Plenty of super knowledgeable reefers on here to help w mishaps you will surely encounter. Lots of pics are always nice to see throughout ur journey. Good luck.

Agree with Michael the sump it comes with is more then enough for the tank. it can handle anything you put in your tank SPS, LPS softies etc. enough room for many reactors and equipment.
