New to this forum and reefing. Been wanting to get into the saltwater side of the hobby for years. Like since I was 10 haha I’m 28 years old now. My girlfriend and I live in northern illinois pretty close to the wisconsin border with our 3 kids. It’s pretty hard finding anything related to reefing where we are. I think the closet 2 places besides petco I’ve found are 40+ miles from my door step. Came here to learn good information which judging by what I’ve scanned through it seems I’ll have no issues with that! Also looking to maybe make some friends if there’s anyone else here in my area and possibly see where they like to get livestock and corals from that’s somewhat local! Just bought a brand new Red Sea Reefer 250 for my first initial tank out the door solely because of the size and having the sump. I figured getting on the bigger the tank the easier to control the water plan would be awesome for me since I do farm and my time at home gets thin in the spring and fall. Figured I’d introduce myself. Thanks for having me and I can already tell this is going to be one of the coolest things I’ve done.

Welcome to the salt side I’m not from your area so I won’t be able to help you with lfs and since your new there are so many things to learn it would be impossible to give you a clear straight forward list of things to do, I will say as a start make sure to have plenty of rock and sand get yourself an rodi machine and start with the basics of clean water from there you are going to want a successful nitrogen cycle best tip I can give is take your time you can’t rush and if you don’t have a successful nitrogen cycle your going to have nothing but trouble during the cycle try to plan what you want your tank to be such as lps, sps, softies, or a mixed reef having a game plan always helps and once your tank is cycled don’t just start dumping live stock in it you have to add things slowly and allow time for the bacteria to multiply to keep up with the new additions.
During the process of setting up your tank I’m sure you will have plenty of questions fell free to post a question or message me directly I’m sure myself and everybody else on reef2reef will be more then willing to help you good luck and enjoy

Welcome!

Glad you joined. When I lived in the country surrounded by farmland nothing was close to me either - online ordering is great - I'm currently waiting on black worm arrival (any moment -- UPS 10:30am deliver) to feed my picky eater fish and I've got TSM Aquatics shipping me fish in October (they do quarantine with medications, etc - rare and awesome service).

This is a good reference 'book' online article if you haven't already found it:

This link may help you find others local to you:

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. Like you, I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)
