Hi,

Curious on your thoughts as to buying a new RP-M powerhead ($130), or buying an older MP-10 non quiet drive made in 2012 for the same price.

What would be your preference and why?

I have an rp-m and really like it. Tons of settings and feed modes.

Easy decision for me, one has a warranty the other does not.

Get the RP-M (or coral box rn-1, same thing). I have the RN-1 and I'm pretty happy with it. Nice wide flow pattern, the MP10 has a much narrower flow (which is good if you need it to reach farther).

My biggest complaint with the MP10 is that the ceramic shaft seems fragile. I broke it 3 times before I gave up. Never had a problem with my 3 MP40's.

RP-M can put out a lot more flow than the MP10 allowing you to use it for a larger tank should you upgrade (everyone does) and the RP-M is far more adjustable than the older model VorTech pumps.

All good points, I appreciate the input. Honestly the big selling point for me with the MP is the quick change wet side for maintenance. Pop off, throw extra on, clean the old. No pulling apart and scrubbing for the most part, or clean at my leisure rather than right away at the tank.

The RP definitely has more flow, but what scares me a bit is reliability. Ecotech is know for that, has been around a long time and has a serious following. I'm not saying anything bad about Reefbreeders, they get alot of solid reviews as well, just saying Ecotech seems to be the preferred brand.

But everyone here says RP, and that's the way I was leaning anyway, good to know others felt the same as me.

Thanks guys!

I wouldn’t pay anywhere close to $130 for a 2012 vintage MP10 pump. Dryside is probably on its last legs and as far as I know ETM only has the more recent quiet drive units which aren’t compatible with the older white drivers. Wetside from 2012 will be toast too, so maybe it’s not that old. T’were me I’d pay no more than $50 for a vortech of that vintage.

RP-M is a nice pump. Bit more than the MP10 in terms of flow; but less than the MP40. Its also going to be quieter than a non quiet drive vortech. Seems like a no brainer.
