Has anyone read about this new line of premium products that Seachem will be offering?
I don't know if it is much better than the current products available to us but they make it sound like their product is so much better. I am hoping it's just the marketing that they are using because I'm very interested in saving money by starting DIY additives. Seachem said their magnesium chloride is ammonia free. Do Mag pellet's contain ammonia due to the chemical process used to make the Mag chloride? They also said that kalkwasser will precipitate magnesium as magnesium hydroxide while excess carbonates precipitate magnesium carbonates. Magnesium hydroxide is "extremely problematic" because it is insoluble and will never redissolve. Do you know if this is true or if Randy has information about this?

I saw this product for the first time today in a LFS that is my primary store for corals, fish and supplements. A customer came in to the store and very knowledgeable as a reef hobbyist and bought one of each needed product which was an arm full of products for his 180 gallon tank after he was having some issues with his tank after a friend introduced him to the product that cleared up his tank. He swears he's never seen his tank so healthy and vibrant making a comeback that he thought his tank was going to crash. I'm in the process of researching the products to see just how good or bad they are before I make any changes in what I dose. Here's a link that's a start to getting familiar with the products. http://www.aquavitro.com/Products.html

All Great questions! MgCl2 usually has exceptionally low levels if any at all of ammonia, but MgSO4 (sulfate) may have large ammounts down to trace in it.

Kalkwassar is calcium hydroxide and adding it to fast to a reef will increase the local pH and precipitate out Mg as its insolu. hydroxide. The MgOH will not re-dissolve easily or slowly. But my no means is this extremely problematic, in any manner other than low Mg levels being achieved rather quickly. If Mg levels are low enough in the aquarium water there will be a faster rate of dissolution from the solid (so long as it is not a living solid). The same is true of the MgCO3.

Bottom line is that they are stating things that are true. No worries there is minimal ammonia in Mag Flake as well ;)

I've been using that line for a couple months. out of the entire line, I now
only use calcification, and fuel. the 8.4 really didnt do it for me, I like to keep my alk at 12 and with the 8.4 it never would get above 8.
