Hello, my name is Martin, i have about 18-19 years of reef experience.
First of all, I apologize if there are syntax errors, I am French Canadian, I live near Montreal, English is not my first language

I currently have practically the same set up as I had when I started, a small 50 gallon with no sump with skimmer and reactor hang on, lit with 4 T5.
I've been saving for almost 2 years, and planning my next set up, an almost ready, it should be for this year, maybe at the end of the summer or in the fall, depending on what's going on with this covid epidemic ???

I read a lot on all the forums, I watched hundreds of hours of video (my girlfriend can't take it anymore ...)
Here's what I thought, and I'd love to hear your opinion.

Red Sea reefer 425 XL White. don’t have room for bigger.
skimmer Red Sea Rsk 600
2 ecotech radion XR30 pro with arms for hanging them
Neptune Apex EL controller
Neptune Cor-15 return pump connected to the Apex and and one Vectra M2 ecotech with back-up battery connected apart from the Apex for redundancy.
I'm going to put a Neptune flow monitor on the return pipe just to let me know if there's a pressure drop.

for water movement, 2 red sea reef wave 25, I would have liked to take the vortech Mp40 rather than the red sea, but I don't really like the look of the vortech, the dry side is too big and I don't like the « ears look » on the side of the tank

1 Neptune leak detector
1 Neptune auto top off
1 Neptune dos to dose alk and Ca
1 Neptune dos for automatic water change.

where it gets complicated is that I am in an apartment, so I am limited in space, but fortunatly, the other side of the wall where my tank will be, it is the laundry room, so I have a water drain for the rejection of the water change, and close by, i have my ro-di and my supply of fresh and salt water nearby (6-7 ft apart ) so it will be easy to set up top off and water change.

Over the years I have had almost everything, flatwrorm, aptaisia, algae of all kinds, my tank has been too hot, too cold, I have been overrun with mushrooms, pumping Xenia, and etc. name it, i got it. and i get rid of everything :-) ,currently I have no more undesirable (except 1 huge flatworm that I sometimes see at night)

i want to start with brand new live rock, I have thought of Marco dry rock ?? I am too afraid to introduce undesirables in my new tank. I learned that in aquarium, nothing good happens quickly, so I'm ready to wait the time it takes for cycles and, everything to set up properly,

with that in mind, what recipe you suggest to seed and start the tank. in the old time we use live rock, but i don’t want to to that anymore.

That's about what I thought, please tell me if it makes sense to you, or if there are things or gears that you will do differently, I'm going to invest a lot of $$ so I'm not afraid to spend 400-500$ more to improve.

i would like quality, and my tank to be automated and safe as much as possible, and I aim for the long term, I do not want to change half of the equipment in 1 year

hi welcome to the reef going to love it here!!
lots of fun/info/fun/help/fun....
pics!!!..we all love pics.. :)
sounds like you have a good handle on it,jmo couple pcs live rock to help cycle :)

I have the RSK-600 in my new RSR 525XL, been running 3 months now. So far I love it but it is a little noisier than I thought it would be. Not terrible, but noticeable. The smaller Jebao skimmer I have in my RSR 250 is much quieter, in fact pretty much dead silent, but of course a lot smaller. There doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with the RSK-600, it is working perfectly but the large bubble chamber does generate a noticeable ‘hum’. I may try some sound baffles on the doors to see how much that dampens it, there is easily room to stick some on.

The 600 is more than big enough for my tank and I feel would easily handle a considerably bigger one. Depending on your planned corals you may find the RSK-300 is big enough and it may be quieter due to the smaller size.

to cycle my new tank, i would like to avoid live rock, the raison is, when we have « junk » in our tank, it is mostly because we introduced them ourselves in one way or another. and with live rock, there are often hitchhikers on it. so the best way not to introduce anything undesirable is not to put it ourselves at the first place.

this is why i would rather cycle with bacteria instead of live rocks, and i would like to ear from you, what you have used and how

That is very interesting to know that because my tank will be in the living room, the noise is a major concern, and should be as low as possible.

i had chosen the RSK600 because on the RedSea website, the RSK300 is recommended for 80 gallons sps, (my system will be 110 gallons) and i am going to have mixed reef, but with surely more sps. i didn’t want to underestimate the skimmer, we all know how it goes, we always end up wanting more live stock tant expected.

hi sorry cannot help with bottled cycle, 30 years thousands of gallons ,always live rock and skimmer almost insta cycle, best wishes ,happy reefing :)

as far as skimmer reef octopus is a great choice been using them on all my set ups they have the sump saver series

check out online stores bulkreefsupply, aquacave, marine depot ,all of those online stores have them

maybe a little change to my set up.
instead of 2 reefwaves, what if i put one reefwave, let’s say on the right, and a Vortech MP40 on the back wall on the left. is this viable on this tank size ?
the advantage, is that i would connect the MP40 on the battery back up and in the event of an electrical failure, i would still have some water movement for oxygenation, and a MP40 will last longer on the back up battery than the vectra (return pump)

i have 4 mp40s on my reefer 750xxl 2 on each side i like them due to the maintenance and no heat inside the the tank most of my equipment is ecotech besides my apex controlleri have 4 xr30 g4 pros vectra l2 return pump was gonna get the versa dosing pump but need a calcium recator for this size tank

i also really likes the mp40 and all ecotech products un general, but IMO, the big dry side outside the tank is not very pretty.
i am not sure what to chose as powerhead, work in progress...

That is exactly my situation and my original thought too - bigger (within reason) is generally better. Unlike a pump or wavemaker you can’t run the skimmer on ‘low’. You can of course program it to turn off at peak times (e.g. evening TV viewing) and once a tank is established running it 24x7 often isn’t needed anyway. If it becomes an issue for me I’ll probably do that.

it's a great idea, and it reminds me that I already did this with my first skimmer which was very noisy, it was plugged into a mechanical timer and was off from 6 to 10pm
now, with the Apex, it will be a lot easier and reliable
