Hi Everyone,

So I've set up my first tank and have it running with freshwater for now. I'll drain and put RODI water in shortly (Been tweaking the set up to shut up some of noise).

I've got a drain into my sump, that drains through a filter sock and into my first of 3 compartments. As well as the drain and filter sock I have my skimmer here. In the second chamber I only have my heater, I'm tempted to move that to chamber 3 where my return pump is.

If I move my heater, what you people recommend I put in there for added support? bio media in a stocking or something?

My questions are:
- Is this worth doing? I've been told I shouldn't need it but every other systems seems to have it
- Is it a matter of have X amount for every gallon of water ?
- If I needed X but would only get half of that now would that be better than nothing or a waste of time

Other than that I've heard rocks and other living things can go in there but want to keep it simple as i can for now.

I used to run my sump with nothing but filter socks, heaters, a skimmer, and the return pump. No need for any other bio media. The live rock in your display tank should take care of everything. The only reason to put bio media in your sump is if you wanted a very small amount of rock in your display.

What if you have dry rock?
It works the same way. Adding dry rock is the same as adding dry bio media. It provides the surface area for the bacteria to grow on.

What if you have dry rock?
Dry rock in the sump is fine. Dry rock in the display is fine too. You will need to do a "fish less cycle" before any live stock can be added. This process can take 3 or 4 weeks maybe even longer.
