Correct. You didn't install it wrong: there's only one way to install. You have to understand that this is a budget friendly skimmer: there is no off position so even if you set the dial to have the min amount of flow the pump is still running. And yes, to empty the cup you either have to unplug it, or like me, plug it into a $10 smart plug and turn it on or off via your phone.

That is super disappointing from Bubble Magnus products. I get it isn't the most high end expensive product, they would be better off just leaving the "off" from the dial, since that's basically advertising an additional feature that isn't there. I've had cheaper skimmers that work better with that said. I'm currently also running a SCA 301 skimmer... weird that a $100 skimmer works better than a $180 skimmer. This one is my first Bubble Magnus product and probably my last if that's a demo of the quality to expect.
