New skimmer question

Hey all, I just installed a new Reef Octopus classic 2000 HOB skimmer . I LOVE it so far, but my question is in watching a you tube video on it , the guy says you can use the side chamber where the return plumbing is for different media . Does anyone have this skimmer? Is this true? If so have you used it in that respect? What type of media? I know, that’s several questions all rolled in.

Same for the 1000 (and any type with this design).
My friend runs carbon in a bag through it.....you could run any type of media thru it......he also drips Kalk at this point (tank is on other side of wall where skimmer is).
