New smaller fowlr just starting out

Hello,

New to this site and newer to salt water. I am converting a 30 gallon now front tank from fresh to salt. Wanted to do just fish at first. But reading up, looks like some live rock would be best for bio filtration. So, decided on fowler. With such a small tanks, would a hang on the back power filter alone work well? I am not ready to throw money into a sump system yet if not necessary. Any suggestions?

Just get a good skimmer, don't even look into a power filter unless your thinking about using it for Carbon or GFO. Powerful Skimmer and alot of Live Rock, along with good water flow, and your good to go.

Thanks for the feedback. So, the live rock does all the filtering? And the skimmer helps it along. Is that the idea?

Yes. The live rock is the biological filter and the skimmer helps by removing organic waste before it can decompose. You'll still need to do water changes. I found it easier to keep nitrates low in my saltwater tank than in my freshwater tank because of the live rock. Good luck!
