New Sony a6300

I've always been a Nikon guy, but @saltyfilmfolks knows a lot about cameras. Let's see if he has any comments.

Thanks

i really like the size of it , just wanna to know if its worth the 1000$ or should i just get a nikon d7200
IDK about the Nikon, but my wife has taken some AMAZING pics with the A77ii, and it's also in the $1000 price range.

I don't want to comment on the brand issue, but I will make one general comment. The quality of the photo depends more on the glass (lens) than the camera itself. That is obviously my opinion,

It depends really on your budget..but If I were you, I'll get the D7000
or D7100 or better the D7200 and get a good lens. check the difference, reviews and features.

Personally, I haven't tried Canon nor Sony so I can't really say which is better than the other. They are all great brands. It's on the user on how to maximize and learn the functions, features.Good luck!

Personally I think dslr for beginners is a bit daunting and I am a huge fan of mirrorless. (i have old manual lenses and it Perfect for that). The compact size is better for any tourist mom or dad. Sony has always been ground breaking with color and sensors. Yes I have Nikons but also Lumix (leica) Mirror less. Make sure you can get long zoom short zoom and for reef macro or lenses with a close focus.(no folks you dont NEED a macro)
On the lens in this pic there are measurements on the lens, thats the focus distance.

another way to test is go to the store and put a penny on the counter and get it to focus on it. The nikon kit lenses don give good close focus. (because of the flange depth for you pros)
I love my nikons and have vintage ones too, but in my industry, on set still photographers are switching to the high end fuji and sony mirrorless.

as far as the canon sony nikon whats better debate, there is none. the difference is in ergonomics and color profile. We used to get a great camera(nikon/pentax:D) and change film to get different color. Now I change cameras.

Hello,

I'm just starting to take pics of my tank and have a sony a6000. I was thinking of getting a macro lens to get the best closeup and detailed shots possible. Will the macro lens be the right choice or would a zoom lens be more appropriate?

Thanks so much for the help!

Hi Betsy, Welcome to Reef2Reef!
What your really looking for is a lens with a very good "minimum focus" distance. This is what makes it a macro.
a standard macro is yes limited in its use sometimes because it is not adjustable like a zoom lens, but its usually the easiest to find to do macro.
the mirrorless cameras have some advantages over dslr as the lack of the mirror box changes the way engineers can manipulate the focal distances.
So now there are zooms that have a VERY good close focus. Imo the best way to test this is to go to the store and tell them what your looking for and take a penny and put it on the counter and play with the lens. set it as far from the lens as one of your corals is and zoom in.

One thing to look for is, like this picture shows. Is on the bottom right on the front of the lens are a set of numbers. this one is 0.25m/0.82ft. That is the minimum focus for the lens.
so the closest you can put an object to focus on is .82 feet. about ten inches. Look at YOUR lens and play with that.

A zoom has more magnification for closer pics of an object.

A macro will give you pics of thing closer to the lens.

a zoom with with a close focus will give you closer pics of an object closer to the lens.

Got it. Thanks so much for the info. I'm looking forward to getting great shots of my tank.

I'm looking into this lens. What do you think?

Sony - 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 Telephoto Lens for Most Sony Alpha E-Mount Cameras - Black
55-210mm focal length (35mm equivalent 82.5-315mm)
Offers a wide zoom range, ideal for sports and nature shooting.

f/22-32 minimum aperture and f/4.5-6.3 maximum aperture
For optimal light gathering, resulting in clear, detailed images.

13 elements in 9 groups with 7 circular aperture blades
Plus 2 ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, which help reduce chromatic aberration and color bleeding, ensuring high-quality image capture throughout the entire zoom range.

check the close focus to be sure, it may be written on the front or in the manufacturer specs. Its probably a great lens just make sure it does the thing you want it to do.

The D5500 has one HUGE advantage in my own opinion. That would be the tilty screen. I have a D5100 and I got it for that reason. It wasn't a cost thing at all. I originally got mine for shooting video... even though it isn't the best... at all. Even though it produced some amazing shots. As for the stills, shooting top down in the tank the screen comes in handy focusing and composing an image. Now on mine the ISO wasn't the best thing to mess with but I have heard they have cleared that up quite a bit.
