I’m going back to my old roots when I used to successfully grow colorful acropora from small frags to colonies. The biggest difference between then and now is a tank started with majority live rock vs a tank started with majority dead rock. I know plenty of you have had luck with all dry rock but, not me. With that said, 44% of my rock in the new tank will be dry rock and 56% live. I just got the new tank filled up and put in my new dry rock I ordered and I’m ordering live rock from KP aquatics today, which I should get in about 10-days. I have a bottle of Dr. Tim’s on hand and also a bottle of MB7. Should I add an ammonia source now and throw in either the Dr. Tim’s or MB7 today? Or should I just wait for the live rock, to arrive which will have plenty of die off and then add in my bacteria in a bottle then? To me it makes sense to add the ammonia source and bacteria now to the dry rock while I’m waiting for the live rock. But on the other hand, I want the main bacteria in my tank to be the stuff from the ocean coming in on my live rock in 10-days. I’m making up my own science in my head that maybe if I add the bottled bacteria to the dry rock before the live rock arrives then then the bottle bacteria population will be dominant over the bacteria from the ocean when I finally add that in 10-days.
