New start after an 8 year break!

Hi and welcome to Reef2Reef!

I have gotten enough reminders and messages to introduce myself from admins so here it goes so I stop receiving them lol

I’ve been in the hobby for quite sometime but took a break after a tank failure that leaked over 160g all over my floors and killed all fish and corals overnight so I took a long break!

Fast forward 8 years and my new tank is set up and installation is finishing tomorrow to start the cycle. To say I’m excited is an understatement! I can’t wait to have this tank up and running <3

Here are some photos and how I’m planning on setting it up. Looking forward to sharing this journey here and meeting other reefers in the process

Thank you <3 Oh my gosh….soooo many new methods, gear and additives since I took a break. A bit overwhelming to be honest lol

I’m a bit old school though so just going to go back to what used to work for me in the past….Kalkwasser, mag and some trace elements as needed. I tend to just watch how my corals are doing and if they’re doing well with the basics I don’t find the need to add anything extra.

Im a huge fan of aquaforest, and i read you are wanting go use the balling method. So to make things more easy for you, you can just dose "all for reef" and your done no kalkwasser needed, no mg, nog ca just rodi and all for reef. As for a better more bio diverse cycle AF life source and AF Life Bio fill. Tropic marine also has a probiotic reefing method i guess, i think its really worth looking into

oh and also COPEPODS really important

Thanks for the info! I’ll definitely take a look at Aquaforest I did look into AFR but I like to be able to tweak Ca, Alk and Mag separately when needed. Kalkwasser worked well for me as I always had low PH. I have horrible air exchange where my aquarium is located and with 2 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats my PH was always low and Kalkwasser kept it stable for me and I was able to supplement Ca, Alk and mag as my system got more mature.

Plenty of time for me to do more research as I like to cycle for at least 3 months before adding anything…..oh and I’ll definitely be adding Copepods and dosing phyto frequently

That should be easily solved by hooking up an air scrubber to your skimmer silencer It filters the Co2 from the air and increases your ph fantastically. When using balling you should bring parameters to a stable level then dose equel amounts of solution. It should level itself out

Edit: as for the phyto... idk maybe wait until your reef is more mature and you are having problems keeping low nitrates etc. I see this more often in fully stocked reefs then newer ones with smalls frags. If you keep your nitrates stable a 10% water change weekly is enough. If not you need to do more. This brings me to keeping your water stable, just keep the same levels as your synthetic salt at 1.025 SG. Otherwise you need to tweak your salt and this is allot of work
