Hey guys,

I have an established 29 bio cube in which I currently have 2 perc. clowns and a six line. I have xenia, and a few different mushrooms. The tank has been established for just about 2 years now. I had a minor crash in which I lost all my SPS and LPS last summer. Then my Kessil A360WE Tuna Blue white side died on me. I just recently installed an AI 16HD Prime. I currently have CC as substrate which just looks lack luster and dingy. I would like to venture to doing sand or potentially bottomless. Looking for input on how to go about this and what is feasible.

TL;DR Looking for help on switching from CC to sand or bottomless.

Thanks!

It’s best to remove it a little at a time with water changes.

I have a thread of your job, we like tank surgery!

side benefit of the thread, considering all jobs for the pattern they are:

you'll never have to own an ammonia or nitrite test kit again for as long as you reef. how much does ammonia testing factor below, did we ever need it?

is there any move more likely to induce a cycle than rinsing one's entire sandbed in tap water (and by extension removing it, upgrading it, mixing it with another substrate...all the same impact...clean means you can do what you want, its detritus waste clouding that kills the thread shows)

a secondary benefit should be never needing to use bottle bac again, post cycle, for the rest of your reefing.

going bare bottom, moving homes, fixing cyano, combining tanks, moving to a reef convention and not killing stuff, preparing for long power outages, simply working preventatively before things invade (Jon's example #1 in thread) are 100% exactly the same move...a rip clean. in your case, you'd leave the sand out upon reassembly.
