New Sump design

Based on this site http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume...bafflesart.htm i bought a 15 gallon long today. I will be picking up the baffles sometime tomorrow and will have the sump done hopefully by Sunday. (School and Work are first)

With that said I have some questions:

What is the standard baffle height? 7 ", 8 ", 9 "??

Why does the skimmer need to be in the same chamber as the drain?

Are bubble traps really that important?


I usually use a sump to hold my equipment and that is basically it. This means no Baffles and my equipment consist of Heater, Skimmer, ATO float valves, and Return pump. I will be adding, or want to add an Up Flow Algae Scrubber.

If I don't need many chambers is it best just to ensure I separate the Skimmer and the return pump with a bubble trap to eliminate micro bubbles?

Well baffle hieght really depend on you skimmer because some have a minimal water level that thy sit in to work right. The skimmer doesn't have to sit in the same chamber but that is were the water enters so it is a good place to start the filtering. Bubble traps keep the bubbles out of the display so they don't bother the corals and micro bubbles look like dirt floating around in the water.
