New Sump Design

Okay, so to start things off, I have a 200 Gallon tank and sump currently setup.
The tank drain is plumbed into the sump and the return to the tank is also plumbed into the sump.
-Now here is the problem: This sump is too small and I want to run a cheato/fuge.
-Here is my idea: I am thinking of adding on another sump which would be substantially larger, around 48"x20"x16"
The old sump would have a pump that pushes water into the new sump and then the new sump would as well have a return pump to the old sump.
Do you guys think this would work?

How do I figure out what the gph on the pumps should be?
 
problem with pumps feeding back and forth would be that if one fails/plugs up you would get a over fill somewhere most likly.... or a running dry pump..
 
I agree with Alex, asking for trouble trying to match the flow with two pumps back and forth. If adjusted perfectly it would not be long before a little algae grew in one or a snail ended up in the other and changed the flow. I am planning multiple sumps/refugiums in the future and they will be drilled and plumbed together. Display drains into sump and flows across until it reaches the bulkhead on the other side that continues to flow into the refugium tank which holds the return pump in the last chamber on the far side that pumps water back up to the display. If both tanks are side by side the water level will stay the same. The first tank can be positioned higher so the bulkhead will overflow down into the second tank if you wish.
