So I'm upgrading my sump from a 20L to a 55 and wondering if I should change my design up. Display is 125. Currently I'm running three sections. Skimmer > LR > return. This is an SPS tank and I'm going for ULNS. So I was thinking about leaving out the LR and let the dietrus settle there so I can siphon out. The middle is also where the reactors will be fed from. What do you guys think? I'd have to really slow down the flow for everything to settle. Or is there a better idea on what to do with all the extra space. No I don't want a refigium. Thanks

No reason to change up the way your doing it if its working for you now.
No reason for the extra live rock either unless you need to remove it from the DT for some reason. let the detritus settle so you can get it out.

Why NO to a refugium ??? If you are planning a ULNS and have enough room to actually have a good functioning refugium (beyond a pod producer) it will remove more Nitrates and Phosphates than you might expect. I have an ultra-high bio-load 125g DT packed with SPS and fish using a modded 75g for a high flow sump/fuge, approximately 3/4 of it used as a mixed macro algae fuge. I have had great success with this setup for more than 20 years now. My current system I have only done 4-5 20% WC's in almost two years now, though I do burn Ozone for a couple hours a week or more. Not saying you should do it this/my way just wondering why you would be apposed to having a refugium in your plan.

Cheers, Todd

I just don't think refugiums are effective unless they are substantial in size. I guess with the 55 I'll have more room but I think it would be easier to get all the dietritus out without having a fuge there. But I'm open to ideas.
