Opinions please!

We are starting fresh back into SWF after a few years break and are attempting a set up differently from what we are familiar with.

Ultimately the tank will have some community fish and maybe after a year or so a little coral (poly, zoas).

Our set up is a 90 gal with a 20gal 3 stage sump with a sock at the inflow, g1 skimmer in the mid, a little webbing plastic piece in the front of the bubble trap, and a pump in the last section. I can't remember the specifics on the pump but from what I can tell, it's a beast. We are also running a reactor with phosban that feeds from the outflow back to the sock where the overflow box feeds into the sump. All of our hard goods are used and came with the tank which was previously flourishing corals with the last owner.

We added 40lbs of live Caribsea sand mixed with 20lbs of bamia pink sand. We also have placed around 55lbs of rock that was bleached and is completely dead.

Two people at the lfs told us to take a rock from my swf tank at work to seed the rock we bleached and have in our new tank and that we could put the filter from my swf tank at work in our sump (laying on the bottom) to try to cultivate bacteria in our tank since everything is sterile. A third guy from the same lfs told us to not bother putting anything in our tank from my swf at work because he sees it as prolonging the cycling time.

The advice I have gotten is mixed and I am lost. I know from previous experience that swf is nothing to rush. I don't plan on putting corals in this tank for at least a year.

What is your advice on adding fish to the tank. The third guy said that if we don't seed it from the tank at work, that we can add inverts after 2 weeks and fish at 2.5-3 weeks.

Can anyone give advice on the fish and what to expect with cycling this tank that has no current biomatter?

Thanks in advance!

Does SWF stand for salt water fish? Just not an acronym I have seen before.

Given that you have started with all dead stuff, which will help you not have any hitchikers, I suggest to not use any live rock from other systems. What you can do is use bottled bacteria, Dr. Tims is a good one, to get your tank started. You will need a source of ammonia to kick off the cycle, you can use; bottled ammonia (Dr. Tims has it, can also get it at home improvement stores but I have no experience with that), fish food like pellets, or even a fresh dead shrimp from the grocery store (if you do the shrimp, put it in a net or a nylon stocking because it will deteroriate and keep in mind it will smell HORRIBLE when you remove it. Do not get a cooked one, but de-shelled is fine.) The cycle is a spike in ammonia, followed by a spike in nitrites, then a spike in nitrates. Please do not put fish in for atleast a week or two, the cycle can be very rough on them and cause unneccesary stress and possibly death.

I hope this answers your question!
